Five Question Friday (on Monday)

Happy Monday, folks, here we are again ๐Ÿ˜‰ No Music Monday post today… considering they get no comments, I don’t think it will be missed ๐Ÿ˜‰ And while it’s three days late, I’m remiss in answering my five question Friday prompts so I’m going to go with that. ๐Ÿ™‚

1. What do you keep a stock pile of?
Many, many things, thanks to a Costco membership and picky children. Fruit snacks, individual servings of apple sauce, Gogurts, fruit strips, toilet paper, re-closeable baggies and (of course) Diet Coke.

2. If Ben & Jerry asked you to invent an ice cream, what would it be?
They already made my perfect ice cream, but the discontinued it, it was From Russia with Buzz… White Russian flavored ice cream with chocolate-espresso pieces. If had to improve on it, I’d add butterscotch and salty pecans (though I prefer my pecans as a topping, rather than in the ice cream itself).

3. How do you blow off steam?
Straightening up. When I have something on my mind or am annoyed with something, I take care of my piles and clean out closest. I like the look of a straightening up house (note: I do not say CLEAN here) but just can’t maintain it day-to-day. I am not that person.

4. What would you do if you had an hour to yourself anywhere within a ten mile radius of your home…no kids, no hubby, just you?
[I’m going to avoid the obvious answer of: take a nap – no one said you couldn’t stay home.] I’d either go to a coffee shop and take a book/journal or go shopping at Target. I love being at Target without kids who spend the entire time begging for toys.

5. When you were 16, what was your curfew in the summertime?
It varied depending on who I was with and what we were planning on doing. Mostly my parents would let me tell them when I wanted to come home and we’d negotiate from there (rarely was it after midnight, usually much earlier). Seldom was I disappointed in the curfew time, you can get plenty of boyfriend make out time in before 10 p.m. and I hung out with my friends all day at school so really, as a 16-year-old, what was I missing out on? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Five Question Friday

Hello there, Friday! Our first “official” week of summer is coming is coming to close… do you feel like a week ends on a Friday or a different day? I was trying to figure out what I think about that and I guess I see weekdays and weekends as separate things. Weeks begin on Monday and end on Friday and then… weekend. Perhaps I’m putting too much thought into it.

1. Would you grow your hair out to donate it?
Well that’s an easy one to answer because I am currently growing my hair out to donate it to Locks of Love [it’s on my list of things to do before I turn 35]. I haven’t had my hair long since our wedding, mostly because Simon prefers it short, but I am enjoying having it longer and being able to put it up different ways. I’ve also discovered that my hair will behave more wavily longer than it does when it’s short so it’s kind of nice to have almost-curls (something I’ve always wanted but never been able to achieve – which you might have noticed in the photo from yesterday’s post with my lovely perm).

2. What song makes you think of summer?
Summertime by Will Smithย  will without fail always be the go-to summer song for me. [Anyone else watch Fresh Prince of Bellaire when they were growing up?] This summer I have two songs… the first is “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People because it was very popular and in a commercial when we were in Australia in January and it was summer there. And my current summer song is “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction because it’s requested during every car ride by my kids.

3. Are you a flip flops or sandals kind of person?
I wear both and but I am picky about my flip flops and only wear Teva Olowaho flip flops – so comfy! Get yourselves a pair today…

4. Favorite summer treat (ie ice cream, snow cones, etc)?
Again, when ice cream is on the table, I don’t know why anyone would pick anything else… It’s a perfect food.

5. Do you do something special for the father of your children?
I have a couple surprises up my sleeve this year that I think Simon’s going to like. But that’s all I’m going to say about that for now… Liam did try to give Simon his father’s day stuff this morning but I told him it needed to wait until Sunday which showed great restraint on my part because I have a hard time waiting to give people gifts (awww, look at that, I’m growing as a person).

Five Question Friday

According to WordPress, this is the 50th post I’ve entitled Five Question Friday – that’s quite an accomplishment (though I know I’ve done more than 50 5QF posts so I can’t really call it a true milestone as this is probably more like 54 or 56 or another wonky number). So really I just wasted your time with that sentence. Here’s another one: I don’t actually think that Miley Cyrus will a) get married to Liam Hemsworth any time soon and b) stay married to him for more than 2 years; she is 19 and 19-year-olds aren’t really known for their good judgement or long-term commitments (no offense 19-year-olds, if it makes you feel any better 33-year-olds like myself aren’t really known for our flexibility or diehard commitment to fun). [Someone I follow on Twitter told people to lay off Miley because “…if [Liam] asked you to marry he, you’d say yes, too.” If I wasn’t already married to my very own Australian, I’d 100% agree with that statement.]

I apologize for that last paragraph and in advance for anything you are about to read… I have a slight case of vertigo this morning (caused, I think, by a potential migraine) so I’m a little all over the place but the show must go on and my head isn’t killing me yet, so blog, I will!

1. Did you do anything special for your kids on the last day of school? Or did you parents do anything special for you?
I took Liam out for ice cream after school so that’s special – though we often do stuff after I pick him up from school so it wasn’t extra special, just run-of-the-mill special. I don’t remember doing anything special on my last day of school. I do remember once in middle school, or was it high school, going to my friend Crista’s house on the last day of school with a whole lot of our friends (who weren’t supposed to be at her house) and her mom came home early from work [I cannot confirm or deny whether we were playing spin the bottle – totally special]. Someone spotted the car in the driveway and about 20 teenagers ran out of the back of the house before she came into the house through the garage and I don’t think she had any idea what happened. Three of us were left inside to claim any left-behind items and then we high-tailed it out of the house ourselves. While I was quite innocent as a teenager, I’m quite certain the things I did do will make me always suspicious of my own children and their actions when they are teens [Dear Liam and Jack: You’ve been warned. Love, Mommy]

2. What’s your favorite summer tradition with your children?
The Memorial Day picnic with my college friends and their families always kicks off the summer. At least one trip to Holland to the beach. We love the 4th of July Parade in Cascade. And backyard time either grilling out with friends or playing in the kiddie pool.

3. What was your favorite thing to do during the summer as a kid?
Going camping. Hand’s down – I LOVED camping. We had a pop-up camper and spent at least two weeks every summer up north and I can’t think of anything that I didn’t like about those trips. We hope to go camping with the boys this summer… hopefully they love it as much as I did.

4. How old were you when you were married? Were you a Bridezilla?
I was 26 when I got married, old for my group of friends as I am the most recently married one out of all of us. I don’t think I was Bridezilla but I was super organized. I had spreadsheets, table diagrams that I did to scale on the computer and timelines [I wanted to be a wedding organizer in my former life].

5. What is your favorite girl name? (I’m needing suggestions.)
When I was pregnant with Liam, our girl name was Emma Grace and then with Jack it was Fiona Lynn (and Sydney at one point). I like old lady names like Ruby, Stella and Edwina. (Totally kidding on Edwina; I’m going to go out on a limb and say that name is hideous – though I’m sure to get someone who reads this who named their daughter that as I did when I said I didn’t want to be name Robin Renee and someone found my blog who was named Robin Renee – sorry, again).

Five Question Friday

It’s Friday… woo hoo!

Liam has two days of school left… where has the year gone?

We’re going on a double date this weekend… woo hoo!

Jack is moving up to a new room at daycare on June 11… sob.

It’s raining and 55 out… Monday it was sunny and 90… why does Michigan weather still surprise me?

I finished one of the most dissatisfying books I’ve ever read yesterday so to cleanse my palate, I read a new one… start to finish. This morning I am tired, but not mad at the world because of the bad book. Worth it.

Time for Five Question Friday…

1. What were you scared of as a kid?
So many things…

  • the Thriller video (thanks, Marty)
  • something coming out of the toilet to get me
  • people popping up in windows while I am looking out of them (particularly at night – but I think this happening at any time of day would scare me still)
  • things chasing me (I hated tag)
  • big dogs
  • bees and wasps (still am)
  • my parents jumping out of the car while we were going down the hill by my house (I had a dream about this and could envision it happening for months afterward every time we rounded the corner at the top of the hill for home). You know… the usual ๐Ÿ™‚

2. Do you sleep well in a hotel?
I’d say yes, though it often takes me some time to fall asleep in a new place. Growing up when we’d road trip as a family I would be doomed if I didn’t fall asleep before my parents because they both snored, LOUDLY and I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep for forever if they fell asleep first. But once asleep, I’m fine. Ironically, before I got my tonsils out, I also snored badly. One time Simon (who did and still does snore) and I were in Chicago with our friends, Kara and Andy, and we woke up in the morning and they were gone. Come to find out, we had kept them awake with our snoring so they took everything off their bed and were sleeping in the closet (I have no idea why our chain hotel room had such a big closet). Sorry about that, guys.

3. If you could meet any celebrity, dead or alive, who and why?
I used to answer Robin Williams to this question because any time I see him in an interview, he’s always cracking the other person up and I love a good laugh. But really, I don’t know that I’d have anything to say to him. In general, I’d love to meet a celebrity who I think I could be friends with, with the hopes that they would want to be my friend long after our meeting because how cool would that be… but I’d want to genuinely like them because I can’t fake like someone, I’ve tried.

4. It’s a hot summer day. Do you prefer to be pool side or at the beach?
Depends… If I’m by myself, then pool side but if the kids are with me, beach (fresh water, please). They are happier there and aren’t at as great a risk of drowning because they inexplicably and mistakenly think they can swim. Plus the sand keeps them occupied more than anything could if we were just poolside.

5. What is your favorite summer dish?
Do mojitos count?
{Anything grilled is the cop-out, but real answer.}

Five Question Friday

Yesterday, after a haircut and trip to the grocery store, Jack fell asleep in the car on the way home and didn’t wake up when I carried him into the house and plopped him in his bed, just rolled over and continued sleeping. If you know us at all, you’ll know that Jack is a non-napper – he stopped napping at 2 years old and hasn’t looked back (which is almost offensive to me because until I had him, I LOVED naps – more on that below) – but he has been napping at least once a week at daycare for the last month (much to everyone’s surprise). I decided to just let him sleep and worry about the consequences later because he had been super grumpy since Simon and I exchanged children/cars. Despite the possible impending doom that could stem from a toddler who napped too late in the day, Liam and I had a pleasant evening without Jack around to get into everything. After two hours (and nearly at bedtime) Jack emerged from the bedroom, bleary-eyed but in a much better mood than his pre-nap self. He proceeded to eat constantly for an hour and didn’t really fight me when I announced it was bedtime. Liam zonked out right away and Jack was mostly quiet, though he did come out of his room crying around 10 (I assume he was awake until then) but either way I couldn’t help but think that this must be what having a teenager is like. Mood swings, insatiable hunger and random sleep patterns.

1. Are you a napper?
I used to be a great napper, but I need a couple of hours for a good nap. My husband can power nap for 15 minutes and feel refreshed, I believe this is because he can fall asleep nearly on command. I, on the other hand, take at least 15-30 minutes to fall asleep, even when I’m dead tired. So I’ve had to give up on naps because when it takes that long to fall asleep, by the time I’ve finally nodded off, it’s time to get up and I’m more tired than when I began. I miss naps.

2. What was your favorite subject in school? Most hated?
If I’m being honest, my most hated subject was gym – so much so that I took it for summer school because the class was only 6 weeks instead of a whole semester. Plus I was such a nerd that I could take more academic classes rather than waste my time with a physical activity. And changing in the locker room did not at all appeal to me (clearly this was before having children which caused me to lose all sense of modesty).

My favorite subject… hmmm… everything other than gym, really. I liked school. I was smart and getting good grades came easily to me so I enjoyed most of my classes. Can I pick yearbook as a subject? Let’s call it media arts… that sounds better. I really loved yearbook and my senior year I was co-editor so I had three hours of yearbook in my schedule for the second semester (rough life, I know). Given how much I enjoyed graphic design, you’d have thought I wouldn’t have bothered being pre-med my first semester in college, but alas, at that stage in life I was still driven for greater success (at least until I realized I didn’t have it in me to be in school for nearly a decade before I ever got to be a doctor and help patients). Plus graphic design and communications so much more fun and thanks to yearbook media arts, I knew this to be true.

3. Did you have the something old new borrowed and blue at your wedding? What were they?
Considering this was just seven years ago, you’d think I’d remember but I’m quite certain I didn’t have all those things – though I can’t be 100% sure. I’m not very superstitious and while I like the idea of traditions, I’m not the best at actually following them.

4. What one thing are you determined to do this summer
Go to the beach and eat ice cream at The General Store on Ottawa Beach Road. Which leads us to the next question…

5. Ice cream or Popsicle?
Ice cream. I really don’t know who would pick a Popsicle over ice cream – I mean, really, there’s no comparison. (Hopefully I don’t offend you Popsicle-lovers out there, but your love for frozen, flavored water confuses me. Maybe you are lactose intolerant?) My favorite ice cream treat… a sundae (preferably with coffee ice cream) with butterscotch and salty pecans. Yes, please.
