Five Question Friday

I feel like this has been a forever week – at least until last night when I surprised to realize it was going to be Friday when I woke up this morning. Does the ecard below apply to anyone else?

1. Did you have any homecoming traditions?
When I was in high school, sure. Each class spent the weeks leading up to homecoming decorating a float and then participating in the parade. Being the social butterfly that I was/am and also a class officer, I always loved making the float. It was endless hours of hanging out with friends and being “creative.” But mostly I was in it for the boys, let’s be honest. In 9th and 10th grade I was too young to date, but while making the float we all got to hang out together which was like one big group date without the making out (at least not by me, I should not speak for others). But in present day, no traditions, we are going to a local high school’s parade tonight, but that is more for the company we will be with (and the candy), but maybe we will make it a tradition.

2. Do you ask your spouse before spending money?
For small purchases (less than $50) we both just make them but for larger items, we do usually discuss the purchase first, but not to ask permission, really just for input and because I think large purchases should be discussed by spouses (you know, unless they fall under the gift category, I prefer to be surprised). I cannot imagine asking permission to spend money – but that doesn’t mean we sneak purchases either, we are just an open book with each other when it comes to spending because ours is a God-based partnership, not a dictatorship.

3. If you could be famous for something what would it be?
Having more money than I know what to do with and therefore being a thoughtful and generous philanthropist (I wonder if I wish long enough that I was a philanthropist that it will come true – why doesn’t independent wealth just grow on trees?) That said, it would also be cool to be famous for finding a cure for cancer, sailing around the world (not that I have ever sailed before in my life), being an author or musician (not that I can carry a tune in a bucket) or being the world’s best mom/wife (because that’s totally my reality – ha).

4. Have you ever seriously thought you were going crazy?
The word seriously threw me off because I was about to say, doesn’t ever parent feel that way at some point? But if we are talking seriously, then no. I suppose we all have our moments but I can realize those are just moments. I fear the thought of realizing you are going crazy – knowing that you are losing your mental grip. That would be totally terrifying and knowing that Alzheimer’s runs in my family makes me fear growing older just that much more because that disease is brutal and heartbreaking. On to happy thoughts…

5. How do you eat your steak? Burger? (as in, well done, medium, still moo-ing…)
My burgers I prefer well done, I do not like pink in hamburger meat but for a steak I will take it with a slight pink line in the center – would that be medium-well? If I ask for well-done in a steak, it’s usually too dry and that is a very sad thing. But I don’t like to see anything with the appearance of blood on my plate, no thank you.

Priorities

My phone has this handy feature where you add words to your personal dictionary so autocorrect will become friends with them and not try to change them. You can also go in and edit that list (though you cannot go in and tell it to give preference to “love” over “live” and “this” over “thus” – whatevs) so yesterday I went through and reviewed what I had in there so I could take out words I’d inadvertently added in my haste to get something typed (you also have to accept a whole word in order to go back and edit it, otherwise it won’t let you type in the middle of it since it doesn’t recognize it and when you’ve typed a big word, you don’t want to start over so I’ve accepted certain words just so I could go and fix them, which is how I ended up with the non-word “babysutting” in my personal dictionary. So I went through and cleaned up my list and was amused by a number of words I found in there – keep in mind, these are words that autocorrect would not recognize so I had to manually add them:

  • autocorrect (irony right there)
  • Bieber/Biebs
  • boob and boobs
  • burrito
  • carmelitas
  • Chewbacca
  • cilantro
  • crapsicle
  • cumin
  • decaf (because it’s just not necessary)
  • detox/detoxed/detoxes
  • ditty-bling (I have no idea)
  • farted
  • frak
  • frosting
  • Magneto
  • minja
  • Mraz
  • mullet
  • noes (as in “ohs noes”)
  • obvs
  • peed/poo/poop/poops/pooper/poopy/pooped/potty (I have boys)
  • s-e-x (I had to spell it, apparently autocorrect is a prude)
  • shit/shite/shitting/shitty (see above, and sometimes you just need to swear, sorry mom)
  • smoothie
  • tomatillos (the last in a list of Mexican recipe ingredients; what does autocorrect have against delicious food?)
  • weepy/wheezie/whiny/whammy/wifey/wonky
  • xtina

Oh how this makes me laugh.

Wednesday Randoms

image
For two weeks in a row you get some Wednesday randoms… lucky you!

  • Liam is reading up a storm which makes me so very proud (in 4th grade I filled a small handful of large index cards with the titles of books I read – our teacher tracked them for RIF – Reading Is Fun(damental) – I was a bit of a book nerd, still am). He’s also started the Magic Treehouse Series and I’m excited to read those with him. I wish he loved math as much as he loves reading (and also making things out of Legos).
  • Speaking of Legos, I made an alligator out of Legos yesterday which impressed the pants off of Liam – he kept saying, I really like that alligator you made, mom, you did a great job! Liam’s love language seems to be words of affirmation.
  • My hair is officially LONG, but I still want to grow it out a few more inches before lopping it off for Locks of Love – sorry, Simon, you’ll just have to wait about 6 more months (my husband is one of the few who prefers shorter hair)
  • I know I just posted a search term thing last week, but the following just came through and cracked me up: “how to care for a duckling” you are barking up the wrong tree with this blog, sorry.
  • The Civil Wars Radio station on Pandora is the awesome. Listen to it. You will be happy.
  • I believe that desserts should be all-in, if you are going to indulge, then make it worth it. To wit, I made the following: put a layer of ice cream sandwiches in a cake pan, top with half of a large container of cool whip, pour jar of caramel over top and chopped up oreos (I used a row of Double Stuf); add another layer of ice cream sandwiches, cool whip, swirl butterscotch on top and sprinkle (liberally) with chopped PB cups. Freeze and serve. It was well-received.
  • We went out with part of our small group on Sunday night and I ordered two meatless things at a restaurant where I normally get a Cuban and I think that my friend, Stef, was almost disgusted with me. I said, “You feel like you don’t even know me right now.” It was good – meatless “meatloaf” was the entree with mashed potatoes that had a delicious smokey flavor. SO good. But I promise to order the Cuban next time – with sweet potato fries.
  • I believe that if you almost run into someone with your car, you should at least wave and mouth sorry to the person you’ve almost injured. You should not continue driving, staring straight forward and pretending like an accident did not almost occur. If you do that to me, I will want to then hit your car with my car – I won’t actually do that, but I will want to.
  • I get worked up over people who use double spaces after periods (not necessary unless you are using a typewriter), serial commas (they are evil) and random capitalization (all caps for emphasis is okay, capitalizing words that don’t need it just because well, not okay). I am a word nerd (while I’m laying all my nerdiness out there, I’m also a pop culture nerd but not quite a music nerd – more like a music admirer). Thank you for still loving me.
  • Jack has been waking up in the night for the last two nights saying he can’t sleep – last night he also mentioned his ear hurting but this morning it miraculously doesn’t hurt. Hmmm… I think it’s a growth spurt, which would also explain his crazy behavior of late… he’s been in and out of timeout more times than I care to recount, picking on Liam and instigating a six-year-old’s indignant wrath and also coloring all over every surface in our kitchen while I was going to the bathroom yesterday (seriously, I should be allowed to use the bathroom without a fear of what he will get into). And then last night, he woke up 8 times before midnight and each time needed to cuddle on the couch and snooze until suddenly he’d awake and want to go BACK. TO. BED. But he did do this:

So all is forgiven because these cuddles I get like NEVER, ironic considering our sitter last night said that Jack is always the cuddly one. Um, what?

Music Monday – Sugar and Ingrid

I saw Ingrid Michaelson and Sugar & the Hi Lows last week. Sarah confessed to me as we walked into the venue that she had no idea who the person was we were going to see but she trusted my judgement. I think she’s glad she did (and for the record, she did know some of Ingrid’s songs, just didn’t know who she was). Loved the music. The opening act was great (they are both solo artists who have collaborated – they are cute and talented and remind me of The Civil Wars). Ingrid was hilarious and even better live than on CD – her voice is beyond impressive.

My faves:

Jack loved the tire swing.

Liam is a little excited about his Halloween costume and wore it all day the day I brought it home.

I was trying to catch him rolling his eyes but this was close enough.

Sunrise over Reed’s Lake. And I got to share it with Liam who told me to stop and take a picture. Love him.

Pics from Monday’s concert… Ingrid Michaelson is so wee and so mighty.

The face of trouble… he was on my lap (in the driveway) pretending to drive the van. Um, no.

Jack loves picking his brother up from school which once again gives me hope they will be best buddies. Love his expectant face.

I got two hours to myself Saturday morning… granita from Kava, tunes from Pandora (Enya channel, best for studying) and diving into Philippians.

Fall is the perfect time for pumpkin chocolate chip muffins. Simon said they were better than my mom’s… he could have been lying but he is a good man.
