Top Ten Things I’m Thankful For (This Year)

It seems only appropriate that today’s Top Ten blog would be on thankfulness, but I thought I’d be more specific and talk about things from this past year – and let’s just assume I’m most thankful for the things I listed on Friday (family, friends, jobs and health).

1. Jack’s surgery – a year ago Jack had just had surgery to take a bone from his toe and put it in his thumb and to have his “finger” nubbins removed. I’m thankful that surgeon was skilled, the surgery itself went off without a hitch and the recovery was uneventful – as uneventful as an almost-two-year-old in a cast for six weeks can be.

2. Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital – this was the hospital that took such good care of Wesley when he was first born – our community is so blessed by this hospital and its wonderful staff and Sarah and Brian were so blessed to bring Wesley home much sooner than expected – their little Wesley was quite the NICU rockstar!

3. Weight Watchers and myfitnesspal.com – my two secret weapons (along with exercising) that have helped me along the journey towards the new, better me.

4. Blogging – I’ve been reading blogs for what seems like ages but just started mine at the beginning of 2011 (thanks to more than a little prodding from a certain loved friend named Heidi) and I love it – I’ve always been a journaller just like my sweet friend, Kim, and this is really an extension of that past-time, albeit one that is way more public than the ramblings in my journals from high school and college (those have never been viewed by anyone else’s eyes, you’re welcome for that). Plus, it’s helped me grow a wonderful friendship with my dear friend (and fantabulous walking partner), Sandy.

5. Sugar Momma’s Bakery – though this is in direction competition with reaching my healthier-living goals, I love that this place is near my office (probably good that we are moving) and even though I don’t know the woman who started it, I am so proud of her because she is younger than me and has started her own business. I hope she has great success because her baked goods are AWESOME!

6. Our road trip with the boys to Texas went smoothly and the time we spent there was so very enjoyable! Hopefully we didn’t use up our good travel karma and have some left over for the upcoming trip to Australia.

7. Sunday night date nights – I’m so glad Simon and I have made extra effort to spend time together, just the two of us. I think we can all agree that one-on-one time is key to helping any marriage.

8. Jack’s daycare teachers – we’ve been blessed by all three daycares we’ve “used” since Liam was born but our current home is just perfect for Jack, our into-everything kid. At least once a week I pick him up and he’s in different clothes because he soaked through what he was originally wearing at the water table and they just laugh and tell me how much fun he had that day.

9. Kindergarten – Liam loves it and I’m so glad we got into the district we did with our county’s schools of choice program; we only wish it was full day every day – Liam would love it even more then! But he has nothing but good things to say about every aspect of his day and he adores his teacher – on the weekends he draws her pictures and practices whatever he’s been working on to give to her on Monday.

10. A new church home – after years at the same church, we made a switch in April to the church where I’d been going to MOPS for the last five years. I miss much of our old church, but this new church is smaller and more suited to where we are as a family right now. I wish we could go to both… but am so thankful to be blessed where we are at in this time.

What are you thankful for?

Music Monday: TV Show Faves…

Back when I started my Music Monday posts, I mentioned that I discovered David Gray while watching an episode of Dawson’s Creek, here is a small sampling of some other favorite songs I discovered while watching TV (see, TV is good for something).

Feels Like Home | Chantal Kreviazuk [Dawson’s Creek]

You Take My Breath Away | Tuck and Patti [Dawson’s Creek – again]

Long Day is Done | Norah Jones [again, Dawson’s Creek]

She Will Have Her Way | Neil Finn [Felicity]

God Put a Smile Upon Your Face | Coldplay [Alias]

Have you discovered any favorites watching TV?

Thankful

Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the
Rock of our salvation.  Let us come before him with
thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.

Psalm 95: 1-2

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
Colossians 3:15-16

Five Question Friday

Hello, Friday, so good to see you again! We currently have no set plans for the weekend and I’m glad about that because that’s not likely to happen again until maybe February… or ever.

On the way to school this morning, the following conversation occurred:
Liam: I’m not happy with just Jack.
Me: Oh really, did Jack do something to upset you.
Liam: No, I think we should have more than two kids. We need three.
Me: Well, I don’t know that we are going to have any more kids.
Liam: But God knows… and Jesus.

This comes after a conversation we had yesterday where he was trying to pin me down on exactly how the doctor got the baby out of my body. So I asked him how HE thought it happened and he said he didn’t know but he did know that the doctor didn’t just reach in my throat and pull it out because their hands would be too big. [No kidding.] Actually, it comes after multiple conversations on all different aspects of being pregnant and having babies – someone has babies on the brain and it is NOT me. It kind of cracks me up and makes me wonder if he knows something I don’t about God’s plan for our family… he regularly says God tells him things, like is morning God told him to push the booger back in his nose rather than blow it out.

On that note, Five Question Friday…

1. Do you have a go to song that always puts you in a good mood?
I love music – duh, I have a fairly regular Music Monday posting/feature thingy – and I also have a number of songs that put me in a good mood, but there is one that tops the list: Babylon by David Gray, I just love the music intro and the moment I hear it, I smile.

2. Are you a real Christmas tree kinda person or do you go with a real fake one?
Fake all the way, I hate the needles. But as I mentioned yesterday, we haven’t put up a Christmas tree in ages. We just enjoy the one at my parents’ house.

3. What are you thankful for?
So much… family, friends, good health, good jobs, Diet Coke and coffee, church community – that about covers it. And in case you missed it, I am thankful for people who say the right things at certain points in our lives.

4. Which fashion fad from the past do you wish you could wear today?
I’m pretty happy with where fashion is at the moment (minus leggings or jeggings, I just can’t get behind those for myself). Though I thing I would have loved the 70s – tie dye, muumuus, bell bottoms… all appealing.

5. Do you wait until the “low fuel” light comes on before you fill up the gas tank?
Usually not, but lately, it’s come on quite a few times. I think because my husband and I swap cars so often, I feel like I’m always putting gas in a car so I think it doesn’t need to be done in whatever one I’m driving and then the stupid light comes on and I’m like whoopsies. (Just like that, yes.) I could never understand how people could run out of gas but then I had two kids and a full-time job and other commitments and now I fully understand, apparently in the past I just wasn’t distracted enough to have that happen.

Happy weekend, y’all!

Things I Love: Family Traditions

I was reading another blog today that mentioned you can just expect a Christmas tradition to happen on its own. That you can sit around and plan nothing and expect that in a few years, your family will have a tradition to fall into for the holidays (unless your family tradition is doing nothing, then you are golden). This made me think about what traditions do I want for my kids, my family.

Growing up and really, currently, my Christmases have always looked the exact same and Thanksgiving was also pretty set – just a slight change-up in locations for dinner on that one between my parent’s house and my brother’s house (I hosted once and until we have a bigger house, I probably won’t host again, but I’m more than happy to make food to bring).

For myself, I’ve starting spending the month of November listing one thing I’m thankful for every day as my Facebook status, I hope to keep this up in future years because one can never be too thankful, trust me on that one. I’ve also mentioned that the church I grew up in has a tradition of a Thanksgiving morning church service during which everyone gets to write something they are thankful for on a paper leaf. The leaves are collected and then hung on an empty tree at the front of church – filling it with color and thankfulness. I love that. We’re also starting a tradition of grown-up game night over Thanksgiving weekend one evening after the kids are tucked in bed. We snack and play games (Apples to Apples is our favorite). So fun.

Christmas is always the same… Christmas Eve at my parents house after we are all back from church. We have dinner and then open presents as a family and then eat some more. Christmas Day we go to my brother’s house and eat some more, watch movies and play games (sometimes we even go for a walk, but only if we’re feeling extra ambitious and there isn’t a blizzard).

The problem, which is not so much a problem, is that all of things happen away from our home and aren’t so unique to our little family. So I’m trying to figure out things to do for my kids, traditions to kick-start so they will have fond memories when they are older.

Here are the things I’m going to try to add this holiday season [Note: Can I stop for a minute and note how unprepared I am for Thanksgiving to be NEXT week – yikes!]:

  • Making our own thankfulness tree at our house.
  • I made mini-chalkboards that I’m going to take to Thanksgiving dinner and try to get the whole family to write down their own thing(s) they are thankful for this year.
  • Actually spending a Saturday decorating the house for Christmas with the kids – we have yet to put up a Christmas tree as a family because (a) we have a small house, (b) we are never home for Christmas, (c) we have had small children who would likely knock the tree down about 5 minutes after it was up and decorated – so we probably won’t put up a tree but I have tons of other decorations and lights that can be put up.
  • Doing an Angel tree gift, or something similar, with Liam (Jack can get in on it next year).
  • Doing something every day during advent to prepare our hearts (as a family) for the real reason for Christmas – we just picked up a family devotional last night that might be perfect.
  • Reading a Christmas-related book every day leading up to Christmas.
  • Making and delivering holiday goodies to family friends (this one may or may not happen… we shall see, don’t get your hopes up if you are reading this and you are hoping for something)

What holiday traditions do you have with your kids or do you hope to create?
