Happy Halloween!

Hope you had a fun and memorable Halloween! This photo absolutely cracks me up! One child is having a mini-fit while the other is spaced out. But at least I look cute. That’s what it’s all about!

Now to raid the kids’ candy buckets… at least they also each got a toothbrush! More tomorrow – right now I’m in a sugar coma!

Five Question Friday

I do not plan to make a habit out of not posting on Thursdays but the past few weeks have been a little crazy but the to-do list is nearly done (at least as it stands now – I’m sure to add more to it).

1. Do you prefer cotton, silk, or flannel sheets?
I can tell you that I do NOT prefer silk – just doesn’t appeal to me. But I love flannel for winter – so nice and cozy, and cotton for warmer weather. Cotton sheets feel so decadent the first time you put them on your bed after winter. I also don’t really appreciate expensive sheets – we got a set for our wedding and I took them back and was able to purchase all of our Calphalon pots and pans, I’d much rather be cooking than sleeping anyway… well, that’s not true, but I doubt nice sheets would help me sleep that much better. But someone can feel free to prove me wrong.

2. What time zone are you in?
Eastern Standard Time. Can I tell you I had the hardest time remembering the name of the time zones in the U.S. until I ridiculously older age? For some reason that is just something that won’t stick in my head. Other things that won’t stick in my head, which item people mean when they use the terms “former” or “latter” and State capitals. There are many other things but they are gone from my brain at the moment.

3. What is your favorite part of the holiday season?
Christmas Eve at my parent’s house – we’ve had the tradition on my side of the family of getting together there every Christmas Eve (minus the one we went to Texas). We eat food, we open presents and we play games. All those memories are just so warm in my mind – full of happiness and joy – which is exactly what they should be for Christmas.

4. What is your favorite “wintry” drink? (It doesn’t have to be an “alcoholic” drink!)
My brother, Mike, makes some delicious mixed drinks – he’s been doing a signature one for the past few years. A mini-Guinness, a drink that tastes just like an oatmeal cookie and a martini made with cranberry-orange vodka that he made himself. Those have all been so very good. My old standby is eggnog – nothing says winter like eggnog (or maybe hot chocolate).

5. In your opinion, what is the worst job in the world?
Nothing specific, but any job that feels like a dead-end or that you just hate would be the worst job in the world. I’ve never had that kind of job but there are days I dread going in to work and I like my job so I can’t imagine if I hated it and how disheartening that would feel. [For the record, I’d really hate to be the person who empties out things at the hospital – cafeteria trays, bed pans, colonoscopy “things” – just ewww.]

Phoning It In

Some recent pictures from my phone with a few words…
imageI wish I could sleep like this and not wake up with a sore everything. Jack was snoring so loudly last night I had to turn the monitor down because it was keeping me from going to sleep.

imageA rare moment of sitting at Liam’s soccer game… of course “Uncle” Kevin was making him laugh like a fool, the moment that stopped he was digging through my bag looking for fruit snacks once again.

imageLiam looking like a real soccer player at his last game on Saturday – he finally learned to stay upright through the whole game and didn’t make anyone else cry – we are so winning at this parenting thing! Though, when asked, Liam said he didn’t want to play soccer next year but that he wanted to be on the bowling team. Probably because the only times he’s been bowling were parties – who wouldn’t want to be on that team?

Top Ten Concert Observations for the Elderly

When I first looked into the tickets to see Boyce Avenue, I never really checked what the venue was, I just knew it was Ann Arbor (at least according to their website listing). But it wasn’t until I purchased them that I realized the concert was not actually in Ann Arbor but a few miles away in Ypsilanti at Eastern Michigan University’s campus. I shrugged and didn’t really think anything of it… until we pulled up right in front of the auditorium in my minivan and looked at the waiting crowd of teenagers and barely twenty-somethings and both burst out laughing. We spent a few minutes playing spot the old person and then we bucked up and joined the crowd.

A few observations from the evening… perhaps a slight insight in to how concert-going is a bit different now that I’m *cough* older.

  1. I had no desire to rush the front door and as I noted yesterday, when the doors open, instead of rushing forward, Stefanie and I stepped backwards and waited to join the fray.
  2. The tickets for the concert were just print outs with a scannable code on them, but at the door, the workers just took our papers and didn’t even look at them. This seemed like a flawed system, something I wouldn’t have even thought twice about in college, unless I was trying to figure out a way to only have purchased one ticket and used it for multiple people (which would be wrong, yet cost-effective, and only reasonable given their flawed system).
  3. While the girl next to me was swooning over the opening act and declaring her love for him, another YouTube-launched singer, Stef and I were very concerned that perhaps he needed some medicating to slow him down a bit or some guidance in putting his nervous ticks in check and pausing between ending one song and jumping in to the explanation of the next song. I suppose if I were 15 years younger, I might have found him attractive, instead I found him distracting.
  4. We did not have to worry about being inappropriately old – there were other grown ups there who were there chaperoning their teenage children so they were clearly older than us. There was also a couple that brought their toddler and at the end of the concert they were scooping her up off the floor where she had fallen asleep… why didn’t I think to bring Liam or Jack with me? Oh right, because it would have been a stupid idea.
  5. Earlier in the week, Stef and I texted back and forth over finding a coveted dark circle erasing and age rewinding concealer at Walgreens – and I feel I can confidently say, none of the other friends at that concert had a similar text exchange.
  6. During the second opening act, Stef and I burst out laughing at each other because we were singing along with everyone else to the band’s cover of Justin Bieber’s “Baby” – though Stef pointed out the other girls knew the song because they loved the Biebs whereas we knew the song because our kids like it. [Confession: I actually know the song because of you, Stef. Grin.]
  7. At 9:30 when we were waiting for Boyce Avenue to come on, we were both yawning and checking our watches. I remember when 9:30 was the starting time for a night out, not the time when I was thinking fondly of my warm bed.
  8. There were lots of little couples cuddled up together, but if they were actually paying attention to the lyrics, they would perhaps think twice about making out during a song about childhood abuse, just a thought.
  9. After finding out Saturday was the last concert of the tour our reaction was not to burst into tears and rend our garments but instead Stef hopefully said, “I hope they get to go home and see their mom!” (the band is made up of three brothers) It’s all about priorities and momma should always come first.
  10. At the end of the night, the swagger wagon is a great way to pull into and out of a college campus and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

In case you couldn’t tell, that’s me in the mini(van) in front of the auditorium – I iz 2 cool!

Music Monday: Boyce Avenue

So this weekend was jam-packed with fun and included a girl’s night out with my college friends, Liam’s last soccer game (no falling down or tackling on his part – win!), a road trip to Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti to see Boyce Avenue and date night with the hubs and some friends. This is way more fun than I normally have in a month, let alone in a single weekend. Thankfully I have no need for babysitters for a couple of weeks now, it will give the kids and the budget a break!

I do believe this past weekend’s college venue concert fully completes my 2011 concert tour – especially if I include the kid’s symphony concert I went to last weekend (read about it here). And if I thought I was out of my element at the DMB Caravan… well let’s just say that turning up to a college campus in my swagger wagon was definitely a laughable moment. Or, a humbling one. But it was also fun and worth the trip, the concert was great and the pre-concert meal at Zingerman’s Deli was DELICIOUS! Thanks, Stef, for a great memory!

Facebook post: Out on the town and out of our element. Shortly after this the venue doors opened and as everyone surged forward, we stepped back and Stef said, “This is not how I want to die.”

Here’s a little sampling of the music we heard from Boyce Avenue (they’re a YouTube Sensation™) and one of their opening acts, Green River Ordinance. I first shared my discovery of Boyce Avenue here and can’t believe that it all came together so that we got to see them in concert thanks to Stef’s discovery that they were coming to Michigan! Just another little smidget of serendipity.
