Confession: This Was Not How I Imagined My Life

When I was little, I imagined I’d be a lot of things when I grew up. An architect. An interior designer. A doctor. A novelist. A lawyer. All the usual things. I’m sure at some point I started considering the personal side of my life – what it would be like to be married and to be a mom. But all those thoughts were purely pie in the sky, because how could I possibly and accurately imagine what life would be like. All I knew was what I saw of the grown ups in my life from my own childlike perspective. I looked forward to being a grown up because I would be able to do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted (oh, that is laughable, to think that I would have control of my life just because I was adult). The things I would do and the places I would go.

Well guess what? Things don’t turn out how you imagine them when you are a kid. At least they didn’t for me. They turned out so much better and more fulfilling. Schlocky, I know, but still true. I don’t have some big fancy career that sounds impressive at cocktail parties (nor do I ever go to cocktail parties) but I also don’t work the crazy hours that go hand-in-hand with those jobs and I don’t have the thousands of dollars of debt from the necessary education. Instead I have flexible hours in an environment where I get to exercise my creative muscles and for the most part be my own boss. I have no need for the fancy, glitzy job because I have the one that’s just perfect for me. Which doesn’t mean that it’s without frustrations but that’s for another day.

I need to remind myself that while life doesn’t turn out like you imagine, it always turns out for the best and that’s better than anything I could imagine. Awww… someone’s all grown up. And now I’m off to puke at my cheesiness.

Wonderment

Jack’s at a great age where he’s learning so much every day plus doing and saying new things at an alarming rate. It’s pretty amazing (and entertaining). I remember being so charmed by my nephew, Mitch, when he was this age (Mitch was the first baby and toddler I could fully appreciate since I was still a kid myself when my other nieces and nephew were born). And of course I remember Liam being like this, but at the time I had a newborn and was slightly distracted and perhaps didn’t appreciate it as much as I can with Jack (the curse of the older child, always the first to do stuff but overshadowed by the younger sibling).

Sure, Jack can be a pill. Oh, can he ever be a pill (for example, in that photo above he’s supposed to be napping but instead he undressed down to his diaper and was jumping in his crib). But he is also a total sweetheart who is so generous (though succinct) with his affection and pretty hilarious almost all the time. I wouldn’t trade any bit of his impish behavior if it meant he had any less personality.

Here are the few of the things I’ve appreciated or found hilarious about Jack lately – gotta throw a little love his way since Liam’s been getting all the glory with his new kindergarten gig.*

  • Just last night I noticed the light was on in his bedroom and I opened the door to find him looking at a book and he smiled at me sweetly and asked, “Wanna rock a bye?” So I turned off his light and picked him up and to give him a cuddle and sing “Rock-a-bye Baby.” Because I am a sucker for that boy.
  • I’ve been trying to teach him his middle name so now when you ask him what his name is, he says: “Jack. I, Jack Bennett [insert middle name here]!”
  • And when you ask how old he is, he responds quickly with “Two-n-a-haf”
  • We were reading a book in his room and her very seriously told me, “There’s a problem in my room.” Then he pointed at the flashing numbers on his clock that we hadn’t reset since the power went out over the weekend.
  • He’s recently become convinced he sees squirrels, spiders and bunnies on the floor in his room, in his crib and in his seat at the kitchen table. He tells me they scratch and bite him and very seriously points out where he got hurt (which is always just normal looking skin). We’ll pretend this isn’t a problem until he is doing this as a teenager.
  • When I say goodbye or goodnight he has a routine he asks for that includes: a hug, a big hug (he switches which shoulder he’s putting his head on and grunts for emphasis), a lip kiss, an eskimo kiss and a butterfly kiss.
  • He’s quite certain he knows what music he likes and doesn’t like and will call out from the backseat of the car when he disapproves of what is on the radio.
  • We resorted to giving him an eighth of a teaspoon of vinegar to get him to stop saying nasty words (he was unphased by soap) and he’s mostly stopped that particular brand of bad behavior but now whenever you look at him sharply, he quickly says, ” I no want bin-a-ger!”

I just love this age. It is an age of wonderment and it is wonderful!

*Speaking of new gigs, my first post is up over at Kids on the Grand – stop by and check it out.

Top Ten TV Shows I Have Loved

A new TV season is upon us and I love it but sometimes I miss my favorite shows that have gone on to TV heaven… in no particular order:

  1. Felicity | College me would have married Scott Speedman in a heartbeat (or Scott Foley – really, either one)
  2. Alias | My favorite spy girl, I kind of wanted to be Sydney Bristow when I grew up
  3. Dawson’s Creek | I was team Pacey all the way
  4. The West Wing | Understanding this show always made me feel smart and once my co-worker and I had a pedi-conference around our office and then we squealed with delight over our parallel to the show (TV nerds unite!)
  5. Friends | Thursday night will never be the same – I still miss the college days, all hanging out in our room watching that show
  6. ER | Another Thursday night special; I still remember Carter getting stabbed, Mark Green getting beat up in the bathroom and Romano getting hit by the helicopter – talk about a tough workplace
  7. Family Ties | This family always made me jealous of my friends who had siblings close in age
  8. Growing Pains | Then I watched this show and was thankful for my pseudo only-child upbringing
  9. Cheers | One of the first shows I watched with my parents and could appreciate (more or less)
  10. Alley McBeal | Quirky and fun + random song breaks = good times

Five Question Friday

It’s Friday, here’s what I think about that: WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO!

My extended thoughts, in bullet form:

  • This week flew right by, it helps when we have plans 3 out of 4 nights (tonight will be downtime, I’m excited – almost as excited as Liam is to play Lego Star Wars; since the remote –> head incident, there have been no more flip outs, apparently I can teach a lesson)
  • Liam’s first soccer game is tomorrow, I observed at practice last night that Liam will be the kid who dramatically falls over. All. the. time. This makes me a little nutty. I’m also the yelly parent on the sidelines. I. need. to. shut. it. No one likes that parent, I don’t even like that parent.
  • ArtPrize will be hitting its stride this weekend. Can’t wait to check it out.
  • Sunday night is DATE NIGHT! Dinner + ArtPrize – bedtime routine = happy me + happy husband.
  • Next week I start a blogging gig over at grkids.com’s blog, Kids on the Grand – my first blog is scheduled for Tuesday on the topic of date nights… please stop by!
  • We’re more than likely moving spaces at work and I’m excited for a new place to call home during the work day.

1. Dream job…realistic and completely unrealistic.
Realistic: Freelance graphic design and stay at home mom.
Unrealistic: Philanthropist with independent wealth.

2. Do you fart in front of your significant other?
Yes. We’ve also been known to dutch oven each other. We’re sweet and romantic like that.

3. What’s the furthest you’ve ever traveled from home? How far and where was it?
Not sure if Kazakhstan or Australia is further away from Michigan, but I’ve been to both places. I spent six weeks in Kazakhstan the summer between sophomore and junior years of college with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship – truly the trip of a lifetime. And since meeting Simon, we’ve traveled back to Australia twice, once before we got married and once after with 3-month-old Liam. I never would have imagined I’d go to either place (I would not have been able to even tell you where Kazakhstan was or that it was a country prior to my sophomore year of college).

4. How do you celebrate birthday for your kids? Family only or friends? … Alternate for those without kiddos: How did you celebrate birthdays as a kid?
So far we’ve done family and close friends for both boys but now that Liam’s been invited to his friends’ birthday parties, we did have a friend party for him this year. Going forward, we plan to do friend parties every other year and then letting him pick one friend on the opposite years to take with him for a special outing. Hopefully we can stick to that.

5. Fave thing about fall?
Everything. It’s my favorite season (though I do enjoy the Christmas season). I love the colors and crunch of leaves. I love the abundance of apples, donuts and pumpkins. Friday night football games, bonfires and hay rides – some of my favorite memories are during fall.
