Five Question Friday

Happy Friday everyone! So glad it’s a short week and so looking forward to going to Chicago for the weekend (well, the suburbs of Chicago for most of the weekend and then to the city for the DMB Caravan!! Whoot!).

Do you want to know what the favorite part of my day is? (Well most days except for today when it didn’t happen.) It’s first thing in the morning (which is crazy because I am NOT a morning person. But, most of the time, when I wake up, Simon’s already downstairs (he often wakes up very early and then goes downstairs to watch TV and snooze – I do not understand this as I never wake up before I need to and I would never get out of bed if I didn’t have it; instead I just take forever to actually fall asleep). Anywho, where was I… yes, waking up. So Simon’s downstairs and the first thing Liam does when he wakes up is run upstairs to come see me (read: wake me up) and he is so happy and tells me how good he slept. Shortly after that, Jack will wake up and Simon brings him upstairs and he says, “I wanna cuddle, mommy.” So we all get on the bed and have a happy little moment before starting our days. I love it.

Things I Love Thursday: Internet Recipes

I have a multitude of cook books and while I love how pretty they look all lined up in my kitchen and I enjoy looking through the photos with my mouth watering, I rarely use them. Instead I find my recipes on the internet, either printing them off, copying them down longhand or sitting my laptop on the counter and following along that way. I love finding good recipes and recommending them to others. Today I wanted to share with you a few favorites that I’ve gone back to time and time again… maybe you can add them to your favorites, too!

Mini Ham and Swiss Party Rolls from Tasty Kitchen | I don’t like swiss cheese but baked and all melty with ham, sweet rolls and this divine sauce, and this is one of my favorite meals. It’s also a go-to recipe for when I have to take a meal to a family that just had a baby. Something out of the ordinary that reheats well – you can’t beat it!

2011 Resolution #6: Read One Book a Month, Update 2

#6 on my 2011 list of resolutions is read one book a month and so far this year I’ve done pretty well (six months in and I’ve already read 12 books) … here’s what I’ve been reading:

  1. Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back by Todd Burpo | I already talked about this book here. If you are a Christian, I’d definitely recommend reading this book. And if you are not, it would definitely be something worth reading, but only if you are prepared to explore your thoughts on heaven and Christianity. I hope that through this book that there are people who find faith or who are able to strengthen their faith. We live in a cynical world and it’s easy to be taken over by the cynicism and forget that we are living for more and as Christians we are promised so much more. We don’t need to know all the answers (though we surely want to have them) but we should have peace in knowing that God does have them and He’s waiting to share them with us in heaven. Top Ten Thoughts from a Long Weekend

Hope everyone had a great long weekend! I know that I did… who doesn’t enjoy kicking off a three-day weekend with their birthday on the Friday?

I neglected to have anything prepared for yesterday so let’s just pretend I posted something for Music Monday – it was this video of my youngest dancing to his Wiggles book… he loves his Wiggles, just like his brother did before him.

Clearly he will not be a part of America’s Best Dance Crew, but what he lacks in true talent he makes up for in intensity and finger pointing.

We packed a lot into the weekend and I’m so glad this is a short week because I don’t know that I could do five days in the office, or five days of week-day reality. And I’m equally glad we are going out of town next weekend and leaving the kids with my parents because they have been in rare form lately.

But without further ado, here’s my top ten list:

  1. Being on a diet really makes me appreciate the food I do eat and makes me not want to eat crap and waste calories on things that aren’t worth it. If I take a bite of something and I don’t LOVE it, I just won’t eat any more of it. I also won’t finish my kid’s sandwiches just so the food doesn’t go to waste (instead I feed it to the dog).
  2. To go along with #1, when it is your birthday weekend, you can indulge and not feel guilty (at least not too guilty). It also helps if you take a walk with your kids in 90 degree, super humid weather, because you will still lose weight that week – yeah for sweating buckets before even leaving the house. Today it’s back to veggies, water, whole grains and lean proteins.
  3. Facebook + your birthday = awesome! Also awesome, husbands who meet you for lunch, friends who go out for dinner, in-laws who call from Australia and children who tell you happy bird-day at least 20 times and insist it’s your birthday all weekend long.
  4. Homemade pizza is delightful, especially when made with crust from the farmer’s market and garlic scape pesto in the sauce.
  5. There are few things better than grilling dinner and eating out on the deck with friends.
  6. Though it’s also fun to leave the kids home with a sitter and go out with adults for good food, conversation and many laughs (added bonus when all food is 50% off because they are trying to fill up the restaurant on a normally very slow night). [Note: We realized that the last time we went out with friends WITHOUT children was maybe when I was pregnant with Liam (seriously five years ago). That is just sad.]
  7. When we told Liam we were going to church Sunday morning, he actually cheered – that made my heart so happy.
  8. Just because your kids are super excited to see a parade, doesn’t mean they will behave well (note the grip I have on Jack just to get this photo taken, below). Shortly after the photo was taken, Simon took Jack back to my office, leaving Liam and I to enjoy the “best parade ever, mom!” in relative peace. There’s always next year…

We will take a happy photo and you will like it!

    9. There is almost two hour’s worth of entertainment to be found in playing with water and sidewalk chalk (and a watering can, don’t worry, I didn’t let him drown himself with water).

This is pretty much what all photos look like when I try to get one of the two of them together. Sigh.

    10. Your kids will be thrilled with a box of poppers, colored smoke balls and sparklers and never know they went to bed before the real fun of fireworks started. Even going so far as to declare it the best 4th of July ever! And it was pretty great, but I smile just knowing it will get even better in coming years.

Five Question Friday

Guess what? Today’s my birthday! Happy birthday to me! I’m 33, which I’m going to consider 1/3 of the way to dead – living to 99 doesn’t sound so bad, so it’s completely non-morbid to think that way, I promise. My boys seem to think I’m having a party, won’t they be disappointed when this doesn’t happen? I think I’ll tell them the 4th of July parade we’re going to on Monday is a celebration for me – that’s what I used to think when I was little – all those fireworks were just for me! In actuality, we celebrated last weekend with my family (my SIL’s birthday was Sunday – happy birthday, Joan!) and at the U2 concert (technically my birthday present from the previous year). Today I’m at work and then lunch with my hubby (at a new-to-me restaurant, Marie Catribs, which I know will be delicious and helps me mark a small think off my list). Then tonight I’m going out with two sweet friends while one of their husbands watches his two boys and our two boys – bless him!

I’m hoping to make it to the farmer’s market tomorrow, church on Sunday, date night Sunday night and a parade on Monday – who knows what else we’ll do, I’m just looking forward to a long weekend! Hope everyone else has fun plans!

1. If you had the opportunity to bungee jump, would you?
I really don’t know. In theory I would, but then, it’s one of those things that if I really wanted to do it, then I think I would have sought it out by now. And strangely, I absolutely don’t want my kids to do it, though I would consider it for myself.
2. Would you rather go to the movie theater or to the drive-in?
I’ve never been to a drive-in (I know, travesty), so I guess I’ll stick with movie theater. As long as the seats are comfy and the arm rests lift up – I like holding hands with my hubby unhindered.
3. Do you have your groceries delivered?
I’m quite certain we don’t have grocery delivery in my town, but there is curbside pickup where you order online and drive up to get it but I like using coupons too much to do that. I do however belong to Amazon Mom (FREE) and get my diapers, wipes and random food items delivered. [TIP: You can get discounts for subscribing to a product (i.e., sign up for regular deliveries, which can be cancelled at any time) and it comes right to your door with no shipping.]
4. Eyebrows: Do you wax, thread, pluck, or stay au naturel?
A blend of all of those, except threading. Before an event I’ll get them waxed but in between I pluck (or forget to pluck and then have a whole lot of work when I finally think they’ve gotten out of control).
5. Would the people you went to high school with be surprised by your life today?
Maybe that I’m not a doctor because I was certain that’s what I wanted to be when I was in high school. Though when I changed my major my freshman year of college from pre-med to art (yes, really) and called and told my close high school friend, she said, “Oh, that makes sense, I knew you weren’t going to be a doctor.” Why did she not clue me in sooner? Would have saved me having to get up for my 8 a.m. biology class 4 days a week and from memorizing the Krebs Cycle to the tune of “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” (yes, really). Other than that, I think my life has turned out fairly normal, or close to what they would have thought.
