Music Monday Means So Much

Dear “Search Engine Optimization – India,”

My, what a long name you have! Thank you kindly for the following comment, left on this Music Monday post, it was totally appropriate and spot on:

I must express my respect for your kindness for all those that really want assistance with that issue. Your personal commitment to getting the solution across ended up being definitely invaluable and have consistently encouraged men and women much like me to achieve their endeavors. Your amazing insightful recommendations means much a person like me and extremely more to my fellow workers. Thank you; from each one of us.

It’s good to know that my rainy day song selections helped give needed assistance to those in dire need of knowing what songs to listen to on a rainy day. I so appreciate that you took the time out of your day to  comment on behalf of yourself and your coworkers. It means so much.

Sincerely,
Blog Writer – Michigan (a.k.a., ememby)

Five Question Friday

1. What is your go to comfort food or sweet?
I don’t really have a go-to, though when I want a snack, it’s either somethings salty or fruity and gummy. Tortillas with salsa. Pretzels and cheese. Jelly beans. Salt water taffy. All good.

2. What is the most romantic place you’ve ever been to?
I find romantic things rather schlocky (lucky for my husband who is not really romantic, but more practical – see answer to #5 below) so I can’t say I’ve really been to a romantic place. I’ve been to scenic, memorable places with my husband, so I guess those could be romantic. The Twelve Apostles on Great Ocean Road in Australia, Smoky Mountains on our honeymoon, Grand Canyon in January 2010. And our first Valentine’s Day together, Simon took me to dinner at a local restaurant that served a three-course meal with chocolate in every course, that was pretty romantic (and delicious).

3. What is your favorite thing about fall/Halloween?
The turning leaves. The smell of smoke in the air from a fire in a fireplace.

4. How would you spend 24 hours alone?
At home: Reading. Sleeping. Cleaning my children’s closets. If the 24 hours was underwritten by someone else, I’d spend it at a spa with my girlfriends.

5. Does you husband bring you flowers? Are you the bring-me-flowers type of girl?
See above answer, and also this post. I would actually like to get flowers more often, but my husband doesn’t believe they are good representation of his love for me because they don’t last very long and die (unlike his love – which makes him slightly romantic, if you think about it). That said, I loathe traditional red roses and prefer unusual ones like sterling roses (because of the movie Bed of Roses) or hydrangeas, dahlias or spider mums. But my husband is a great bargain hunter/shopper and I appreciate that more than I’d appreciate getting flowers (though once in a while WOULDN’T KILL ANYONE).

Thursday Thoughts

  • I just love the State Farm commercial where the wife catches the husband on the phone with a male agent and she thinks he’s talking to another woman so she takes the phone and talks to “her” and says with disgust, “She sounds hideous.” It makes me smile every time.
  • I also love “Modern Family” and if you aren’t watching it, you should be – you know, if you live in the States. Hi-larious.
  • Ever since the weekend Jack randomly calls out, “ArtPrize, where are you?”
  • Apparently I need to try a new tactic for getting information out of Liam, when I ask how his day was at school, twice this week he’s responded with, “Mom, I’m just not talking anymore.” So we’re just assuming he’s learning something, though he still says his favorite part of the day is recess.
  • I’m super glad I never judged anyone who put a leash/harness on their child. Why? Because I ordered one for Jack. Simon rolled his eyes at me and then watched me chase after our little munchkin at Costco and said he could see my point. I promise to save it for special occasions (it was bought with the intent that we’d use it in the airport).
  • On a related note, I watched with extreme jealousy as a mother walked up to the school with her younger-than-two-year-old daughter trailing behind her. The little girl didn’t run for the road giggling with glee, but simply followed her mom and then stood there, next to her, not moving. Stood there.
  • On another related note, I also purchased some Calms Forte 4 Kids with the hope that it might be useful on our trip. Either for the boys or for Simon and I – we shall see.
  • I think it would be really cool to own a food truck. Or maybe just rent one for a party. That would also be cool.
  • Though I’m a PC girl, I was sad to hear that Steve Jobs passed away.
  • It’s a MOPS day – so excited! Our table is bringing brunch – I’m a little excited about my overnight breakfast casserole that’s hanging out in the fridge, though I’m also a little worried I might forget to put it in the oven in the morning.
  • Today is Sandy’s birthday! Happy birthday to my walking buddy and wonderful friend! I hope you have a marvelous day! (I love exclamation marks!!)
  • We’re halfway through soccer season – three games down and three to go – Liam’s goal for this week is to kick the ball 10 times (and not make anyone cry).
  • We’re have guests overnight on Saturday – hopefully it’s not poor taste to put them up in Liam’s room (the bottom bunk is a double bed) but it saves having to deep clean our bedroom and we won’t leave Liam in the room to sleep (thought I should clarify that point; we only make my parents share the room with Liam).
  • I’m on week four of Couch to 5K, it hasn’t been awful. So far.
  • Tomorrow is Friday – hip, hip hooray!

So we’re going to Australia…

That sounds like the beginning of a joke. But it is most decidedly not, at least not according to our credit card. We had been planning on going when the kids were a bit older. Hoping that they would be old enough to remember the trip and the family and friends they met while there. Hoping they would be good travelers, less likely to scream and run around like mad little things in airports and plane aisles. We had been planning on starting a separate bank account to tuck money away for the trip. But life has other plans; God knows differently and sort of laughs at our plans because His timing and His plans always win out in the end.

Simon’s mom is sick, that’s the short story. She’s been sick for a while now but her body is no longer doing the things it needs to be doing and the prognosis is not good as they are at a loss for how to fix things, or perhaps more truly, cannot fix them. And that sucks. It sucks for her (especially) but also for everyone involved. Children who will likely not have their mom on this earth come next Christmas. Grandchildren who may not remember visiting their grandmother. It sucks that we live so far away and can’t help more, can’t drop in for visits. But if we did live closer, then the opposite would be true with my side of the family. It’s a no-win situation. When you marry someone from another country, you have to make choices about where to live and when to travel to visit family. The fairest decision (as if there was one in this case) would be living an equal distance from both sides of the family but then no one would be happy or content.

It’s overwhelming to think about the emotional impact of being there, not to mention the logistics of such a trip. And as I said yesterday, trying to fit many years’ worth of special moments and memories into a few short weeks just seems impossible. Knowing it will take every ounce of our parenting patience (and then some more for good measure) to endure the trip with Liam who never stops talking and Jack who never stops running. But it’s going to be so worth it because we’ll get to all be together – Simon’s brother who lives in Jordan is also planning on being there over the holidays so we’ll overlap for a few days and get to meet his wife and beautiful baby daughter.

It’s the trip of a lifetime for so many from the States and we’re blessed to be going for a third time together. But for Simon it’s really just a trip back to his hometown, as if his hometown were Akron, OH and it took a really, really long time to get there (nothing against Akron, but no one dreams of visiting there). But it’s the magic of Australia that I need to keep in mind, the wonder of being in a foreign country. I need to remind myself that even though this wasn’t the plan (and I do like a plan, though not nearly with the same intensity as my husband) there is a reason for things turning out this way and we will ultimately survive the trip and, more importantly, cherish the memories we make while we are there.

It’s a big trip in so many ways.

May God gives us peace, patience, understanding and sleep (and kind flight attendants and fellow passengers who are deaf wouldn’t hurt).

And, we’ll get to see kangaroos… not in a zoo. And that’s pretty awesome.

Top Ten Things On My Mind

  1. Why did they have to remake Footloose? With Julianne Hough of all people? And when did Dennis Quaid turn from attractive leading man to disapproving, fuddy-duddy father figure?
  2. Is it a valid reason to call in sick so I can watch all the shows on my DVR? Nope… I didn’t think so. Equally invalid would be calling in sick to catch up on all the unread blog posts in my feed reader.
  3. Why does George (our dog) have random bouts of licking where he simply won’t stop licking the air? Not himself or something else, just the air.
  4. Which of our possible/potential new office locations are the best option for us? I feel like a kid at Christmas, thinking about the possibilities. [Goodness, that makes me feel old, looking forward to a new office space.]
  5. Is there anything in the world that would tempt Jack into using the potty? He simply has no interest or inclination to not use a diaper. Which incidentally is not too much of a problem at the moment since it looks like we’ll be heading to Australia at the end of the year and I can’t imagine that a newly potty trained toddler + 30ish hours of travel = a good idea.
Which leads to the next thing on my mind:
  6. How on earth are we going to keep Jack and Liam entertained for 30ish hours of travel to Australia and then again on the way back home three weeks later? Anyone want to join us (and pay their own way)?
  7. How can we pack 5 years’ worth (or more) of quality time with family and friends into three short weeks while we are in Australia? And in all seriousness, we are going for non-laughable reasons (otherwise we would not endeavor such a trip with Jack in tow, or even Liam for that matter) and the gravity of our trip is heavy on my heart and mind.
  8. Will Amazon’s Kindle Fire be as amazing as they say it will be? Dear Amazon: I love my current Kindle, but I’d happily take the Fire for a test run of a permanent nature, for market research, of course. Love, Michelle
  9. Who thought it was a good idea for Rachel Bilson to play a doctor in a TV show? This casting perplexes me. Also, why do I watch Gossip Girl and therefore see commercials with Rachel Bilson playing a doctor?
  10. Why does Liam have to fall down constantly while “playing” soccer? At least he didn’t cry during his game this past weekend, sadly he made another kid cry because he pushed them down. Super.
