I Love Messing with My Husband

My husband is a cornball; just like my dad, he tells corny jokes. Or else jokes that only teenage boys and his significant-other-at-work* would appreciate. After repeating one of these stupid or pointless jokes to me, I often look at him and shake my head and say, “Honey, please remember I’m not a teenage boy, or Nick.”  Continue reading

35 before 35

My birthday is Friday, I’ll be 33. I have no qualms about sharing my age (though I don’t always enjoy it when we are walking through the grocery store and Liam tells whoever we are going past, “I am 4-and-a-half, my brother is 2 and my mom is 32!”). I don’t mind at all being the age I am, I do mind when someone thinks I’m far older than I actually am. Two things you should never assume about a woman, her age and the status of her uterus. It’s just best to keep those opinions to yourself.

In thinking about my birthday, I’ve been considering what I might like to accomplish before my next big milestone birthday of 35 (one could argue that the real milestone is 40, but I’m not ready to go there quite yet). Here’s my list, we’ll see how it goes in the next two years.

  1. Go camping with the boys.
  2. Take another road trip with the family.
  3. Start a chore chart/allowance system for the kids.
  4. Teach Liam to ride a bike.
  5. Read at least 20 books.
  6. Participate in a 5K – walking or running.
  7. Sell our house and move into our “forever” home.
  8. Make plans to visit Australia with the boys.
  9. Go on a girl’s weekend with my friends.
  10. Take a 2+ day trip with just Simon.
  11. See at least 5 live musical performances.
  12. Teach Liam to read.
  13. Potty train Jack.
  14. Go to ArtPrize twice.
  15. Eat at 10 new-to-me restaurants.
  16. Take Jack to his first movie in a theater.
  17. Go mini-golfing with the boys.
  18. Take the boys to a hockey game.
  19. Attempt to grow out my hair for locks of love.
  20. Send at least 8 “care” packages to out-of-town friends and family.
  21. Meet my WW’s goal (way before 35).
  22. Get Jack baptised/dedicated at church.
  23. Stay at the JW Marriott.
  24. Stay at a bed and breakfast.
  25. Visit Great Wolf Lodge.
  26. Get an hour-long massage.
  27. Plant a garden.
  28. Send someone flowers.
  29. Join a bible study.
  30. Continue writing this blog.
  31. Start AND finish a quilt.
  32. Tackle the crazy basement once and for all.
  33. Re-finish a piece of furniture.
  34. Get the boys sharing a room so we can reclaim a guest room/office/craft space.
  35. Get vinyl flooring installed in our kitchen.

What would you like to accomplish in the next two years?

Top Ten Celebrities I’ve Wanted to Marry…

“Marry” might be a bit strong of a word, but perhaps date or have a long-term relationship with would be more accurate. Plus, many of the subjects of this list are already married and I’m not looking to break up any relationships, just noodling around with this idea. So let’s imagine this is in an alternate reality… where we are all the same people but not married to other people. Whew, don’t we all feel better? [And, please, don’t get me wrong, I’m happily married. I feel I should say that to defend my wonderful husband; and I almost probably wouldn’t leave him for any of these people. Love you, honey and feel free to make your own list and if you were famous, you’d totally be on this list!]

  1. Ryan Reynolds | Last week I expressed my desire to beat up Scarlett Johansson because she was stupid enough to divorce Ryan Reynolds, but really, that does put him back on the market. So really, I should thank her, in the alternate reality where I end up with her ex-husband and we exchange niceties.
  2. Hugh Jackman | Because I do love accents and he just seems to be a genuinely nice guy who loves his family. Continue reading

Music Monday: U2

I once accidentally told a guy I was dating that I loved him. This happened because we were on the phone talking about music and bands that we liked and then later, I suddenly said, “I love U2!” But what he heard was, “I love you, too.” He paused. I paused. Then I quickly stammered, “The band, U2 the band.” Crisis averted.

But boy did I, and do I, love U2. I am surprised that seeing U2 in concert was not on my life list but it is not (and I’m not adding it just to cross it off). But it should have been there because I have loved them since I first heard their music back in 1991 (there aren’t many bands that last 20 years that I also love – it’s pretty much just them with DMB a close second). So it was a no-brainer that when their 360 was scheduled to come to East Lansing that we would go. So we bought tickets in December 2009, in anticipation of the concert in July 2010. Then the concert got postponed because of Bono’s back surgery, woe to me. But at least it wasn’t cancelled for good. We just had to wait another year for it to happen. [At this point I would like to apologize to Keri for this post, because I’m truly sad you didn’t get to use your tickets the first time around.]

And boy did it happen. I’ve never been to a concert with this many people, at least not that I can recall. I did see Michael W. Smith at the Palace but I’m quite certain the audience was no where this big (nearly 70,000). Hurrah for cell phones with fancy panoramic photo-taking abilities.

Florence and the Machine opened and boy can that woman sing, even after running the circuit around the stage, she was belting it out. But then, I already loved her, “Dog Days” is my phone’s ringtone. But the latest single, “You’ve Got the Love is Outstanding,” check it out here.

And then came the headliners… it was a super-impressive stage that was outshone by an uber-impressive performance. I’d like to imagine U2 put on such a stellar show because they knew the majority of the audience had been waiting for over a year for the concert, but really, I think they are just outstanding performers no matter what the circumstances. [Can I gush more, yes, I probably could.]

And unlike the guy sitting behind us, who complained loudly about his seat and its price, we were very happy with our seats. [Note to that guy: trying to argue your case by noting that you only paid $25 to see Nirvana in Kalamazoo doesn’t really do anything because I was at that concert and it was 20 years ago; given inflation, you would pay significantly more for that ticket today, especially since Nirvana no longer exists and Kurt Cobain is dead (I’d imagine the price on miraculous performances is pretty steep). Plus, Nirvana is no U2.  So please SHUT UP! I’m sure he’s still complaining today.] But bygones, we loved our seats – we could see everything just fine (thank you ginormous screen that did really cool things).

They played all the songs we loved. Simon and I each went to the concert hoping to hear our favorites (“Sunday, Bloody Sunday” for him and “One” for me) and both our wishes were granted. They played everything, the only song I missed not hearing was “All I Want Is You” which we had on our wedding CD. It was everything I had always hoped it would be, U2 did not disappoint. Not in the least (cheesy bits and all, because at his heart, I believe Bono is kind of a cornball).

Please forgive the quality of these images,
my handy cell phone was the only thing I had on my person.

Five Question Friday

Welcome to Friday folks, like most of my weeks lately, this one seems to have flown by yet still taken FOREVER! How is that possible? And the next week is not going to go any slower. In the next seven days we have the following:

  • Going to Lansing
  • Taking Liam to see his first ever movie in the theater, Cars 2, which is appropriate since we have seen the first Cars movie like a bajillion times [Would you believe I Googled “bajillion” to make sure I was spelling it correctly and Google had the answer? Yes, you probably would. I should share my Google search terms with you sometime… they are amusing and varied.]
  • A family BBQ to celebrate my SIL’s birthday and my birthday
  • Church
  • Tailgating
  • U2 concert!!!!! [I’ve only been waiting my whole life for this concert, what is the last year that we’ve had to wait since the concert was rescheduled due to Bono’s back surgery]
  • Full work days Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday to make up for taking Monday off (plus my normal hours on Thursday). I just started a big project for work that has 150 hours slated to it and it needs to be done by the end of July – that’s 30 hours a week for the next 5 weeks, in addition to the regular work I do. It’s going to be a bit busy. But I’d rather be busy than bored. And I’d rather make money for my business than not.
  • Taking Liam to his first friend birthday party at the zoo – I’m so excited to just drop him off and not have to be responsible [we’ve sort of avoided the whole birthday party-going until now because once he goes to one, I know he’ll have bigger plans for his own, considering it has been an uber popular topic of conversation for the past two months and his birthday isn’t for another month-and-a-half, I’d say we’re in for it]
  • Walking with Sandy
  • And that brings us back to Friday, my birthday – which is incidentally the exact middle day of the year [that means 2011 is HALF over – oh my!]

So there you go, that’s where my mind is today… how about a little Five Question Friday?

1. What is your current favorite tv show?
If I’m going to be honest [and I usually am, though never in a hurtful way], I’d have to say Vampire Diaries. And as my friend, Jenny can attest, it’s addictive (I encouraged her to borrow my first season DVD set and she was hooked – I like company with my age-inappropriate addictions). But I also love, love, love Modern Family and Cougar Town is growing on me. And then there’s In Plain Sight and Game of Thrones (which I’ve only gotten to watch a few times when we lucked into free HBO weekends with DirecTV).
