Tuesday Randoms

  • Well, it happened, I forgot to pick up Liam. Technically, I didn’t forget, I thought his art class started yesterday so I wasn’t planning on picking him up until 5:00. At 3:50 I got a call from his school, his teacher started with, ” Hi Michelle, it’s Emily, Liam’s teacher…” and I said, “Oh no.” We both laughed and I went and picked him up (thankfully I was just at work and only 5 minutes away). Liam was not at all bothered by my snafu and the first thing he said to me was, “So my teacher’s real name is Emily?” Mark that one off the fear list.
  • Baby Ethan was as lovely and cuddle-able as I had hoped! Liam and I got to visit he and Quinn in the hospital (Jack stayed home with my parents – we thought that was a wise decision). Liam loves babies and got to hold Ethan twice and asked to have a picture of them printed so he could take it to school for Super Star week.
  • Speaking of Super Star week, I feel like this is a good idea in theory so the other kids can get to know each of their classmates but in reality is just more work for parents. I hadn’t printed pictures for over a year (though I have gotten photo books made, so there’s that) but I had to pull out something for Liam to take to school. We also had to do a poster for Jack’s Me Museum at daycare – more pictures. But at least we are done for the year now so I can go back to not printing pictures. It works well for me until I feel guilty about it (another thing to add to the list).
  • I’m very sad for the apple season in Michigan – I paid $4 for a half gallon of [local] fresh cider over the weekend.
  • My college friends and I are planning a weekend away next month. We are excited. We had to make a list and take notes for who was bringing what – it only took us two hours to cover details for two days (because we get sidetracked easily). It boiled down to this: snacks (sweet and salty, lots of ’em), drinks (alcoholic and caffeinated; see also: copious amounts) and sleep. Also bacon. We are simple girls with simple needs.
  • Simon’s going to Cleveland this weekend for rugby (they made the finals) – I hope they win but I am not thrilled about a whole weekend without my partner in parenting. Our plans at the moment include donuts. That seems about right.
  • The following weekend we are surprising the boys with a trip north to stay overnight at an indoor waterpark. Liam went on his first water slide Friday night and LOVED it (despite describing to me how he had his mouth filled with water at the end, which sounded an awful lot like almost drowning) and I blew his mind when I explained there are places that have tons of water slides and that you can go there and play in the water for hours and hours. Now I am excited for that weekend to get here!
  • Last week we had smoothies every day. I blame a $2/smoothie deal and also how delicious they are. We also ended up buying a smoothie for a guy who was asking for food/money next to the driveway leaving the shopping area. Liam could read that his sign said “Hungry” so he asked if we could buy him a smoothie. I tried explaining that he would rather have food he could put in his backpack but he said, “But I think he would like a smoothie because they are so good.” I want to encourage this kind of thoughtfulness so we bought him a smoothie with added protein and I gave it to him as we were leaving – Liam was very anxious that he wouldn’t need food any more as we watched someone give him a loaf of bread – and I had to apologize if it was strange that we were giving him a smoothie. Liam was beyond thrilled and kept congratulating himself on being helpful. It was a happy moment for both of us – so if you saw a guy outside of Target drinking a smoothie, please don’t think he was wasting any money that someone got him on a smoothie rather than food for his family.
  • Does anyone else plan their errands around where they can get a McDonald’s Diet Coke or visit Starbuck’s drive-thrus? Because I totally do.
  • I surprised Simon with a date night on Sunday night and on our way there, driving just minutes from our house, we passed a brand new Tim Hortons – one we had heard NOTHING about (Tim Horton’s in GR is a huge deal – two others opened in the last six months but before that, the Canadian students at Calvin would drive an hour to Lansing to go to the one(s) there so it was surprising we knew nothing about it). It’s in an old KFC building. We will still go to our beloved Sandy’s Donuts, but we might have to add Timmy’s to the rotation.
  • Our date night was a success – delicious burgers from Stella’s (if anyone knows what they mix in their patties, please tell me – I will owe you BIG) and a superbly-made movie, Argo. Check both of them out, you won’t be sorry. Also, if you want a double date couple – we’re totally planning on revisiting Stella’s.
  • Just realized this list is pretty much a weekend recap and while I could change the title, I’m not going to.
  • I am d-o-n-e with politics, political commercials and people calling my office about politics. Election Day cannot come soon enough… and then we will have a two-year respite before they start campaigning again, because let’s face it, political campaigns are the worst offenders when it comes to getting an early start – way worse than stores who advertise Christmas in October. I’d much rather see signs for Christmas in June than watch another political ad (unless it is done by the cast of The West Wing).
  • I have eaten these acorn squash quesadillas five times in the last week. You should make them if you like good food (or come over and eat them because I’m sure I’ll make them again). And then blame Heidi for introducing me to them.

Wednesday Randoms

For two weeks in a row you get some Wednesday randoms… lucky you!

  • Liam is reading up a storm which makes me so very proud (in 4th grade I filled a small handful of large index cards with the titles of books I read – our teacher tracked them for RIF – Reading Is Fun(damental) – I was a bit of a book nerd, still am). He’s also started the Magic Treehouse Series and I’m excited to read those with him. I wish he loved math as much as he loves reading (and also making things out of Legos).
  • Speaking of Legos, I made an alligator out of Legos yesterday which impressed the pants off of Liam – he kept saying, I really like that alligator you made, mom, you did a great job! Liam’s love language seems to be words of affirmation.
  • My hair is officially LONG, but I still want to grow it out a few more inches before lopping it off for Locks of Love – sorry, Simon, you’ll just have to wait about 6 more months (my husband is one of the few who prefers shorter hair)
  • I know I just posted a search term thing last week, but the following just came through and cracked me up: “how to care for a duckling” you are barking up the wrong tree with this blog, sorry.
  • The Civil Wars Radio station on Pandora is the awesome. Listen to it. You will be happy.
  • I believe that desserts should be all-in, if you are going to indulge, then make it worth it. To wit, I made the following: put a layer of ice cream sandwiches in a cake pan, top with half of a large container of cool whip, pour jar of caramel over top and chopped up oreos (I used a row of Double Stuf); add another layer of ice cream sandwiches, cool whip, swirl butterscotch on top and sprinkle (liberally) with chopped PB cups. Freeze and serve. It was well-received.
  • We went out with part of our small group on Sunday night and I ordered two meatless things at a restaurant where I normally get a Cuban and I think that my friend, Stef, was almost disgusted with me. I said, “You feel like you don’t even know me right now.” It was good – meatless “meatloaf” was the entree with mashed potatoes that had a delicious smokey flavor. SO good. But I promise to order the Cuban next time – with sweet potato fries.
  • I believe that if you almost run into someone with your car, you should at least wave and mouth sorry to the person you’ve almost injured. You should not continue driving, staring straight forward and pretending like an accident did not almost occur. If you do that to me, I will want to then hit your car with my car – I won’t actually do that, but I will want to.
  • I get worked up over people who use double spaces after periods (not necessary unless you are using a typewriter), serial commas (they are evil) and random capitalization (all caps for emphasis is okay, capitalizing words that don’t need it just because well, not okay). I am a word nerd (while I’m laying all my nerdiness out there, I’m also a pop culture nerd but not quite a music nerd – more like a music admirer). Thank you for still loving me.
  • Jack has been waking up in the night for the last two nights saying he can’t sleep – last night he also mentioned his ear hurting but this morning it miraculously doesn’t hurt. Hmmm… I think it’s a growth spurt, which would also explain his crazy behavior of late… he’s been in and out of timeout more times than I care to recount, picking on Liam and instigating a six-year-old’s indignant wrath and also coloring all over every surface in our kitchen while I was going to the bathroom yesterday (seriously, I should be allowed to use the bathroom without a fear of what he will get into). And then last night, he woke up 8 times before midnight and each time needed to cuddle on the couch and snooze until suddenly he’d awake and want to go BACK. TO. BED. But he did do this:

So all is forgiven because these cuddles I get like NEVER, ironic considering our sitter last night said that Jack is always the cuddly one. Um, what?

Wednesday Randoms

  • I mistakenly typed “ransoms” instead of “randoms” for the title of this post, it made me laugh. I’d like to imagine I’m holding things hostage – like all the Legos I find strewn through our house, or a last can of Diet Coke in the house.
  • Liam randomly said on our way to small group on Sunday, “I think instead of a spanking, you should give me a hard wedgie instead.” I don’t think anyone could blame me for laughing out loud at that one.
  • October is the month of Sandy’s due date – I cannot wait to meet that baby girl! (It should be noted it may not be the month of Sandy’s actual delivery – and for noting that, Sandy may kill me the next time she sees me and I would be deserving)
  • Liam has often fixated on doing one thing over and over again (you know, until the next thing comes along and to the point of annoying his dear mother). The current “annoying” habit of choice is snapping his fingers; he’ll be putting toys away or playing with a friend and stop mid-whatever to snap his fingers over and over again. I’m sure it’s some type of coping mechanism but I can’t help but tell him to stop it.
  • Jack has fully mastered the art of telling me he loves me just as I’m about to be fed up with his bad behavior.
  • He’s also mastered the art of wrapping every adult he meets around his little finger. Help me.
  • Fall television is making me happy. So nice to have a stocked DVR for my viewing pleasure.
  • Triple Chip Blondies are delicious – I have to mention these again – but trust that if you have invited me somewhere or I am bringing you food – I will be making these. Also trust that you may not want to think about the quantities of butter and brown sugar in them.
  • My husband very kindly folded all our laundry this week, this makes him a better person than me.
  • I’m praising my husband on my blog, therefore I am also pretty awesome. I mean, right?
  • The boys were upstairs watching TV over the weekend when Liam came down to tell us Jack had gotten into some lotion (it’s never good when the six-year-old notices something is amiss despite the TV being on). While pretending to be a “minja” (a.k.a., ninja), he had managed to fling the contents of a bottle of sleep aromatherapy lotion all around our bedroom – hitting the dresser, the bed, the ceiling, the nightstand light, inside of one of my shoes, a pair of pants sitting on the laundry basket across the room and a pile of books. It could have been worse, it could have been chocolate or the stuffing of our couch. It’s all a matter of perspective – it’s sad when splattered handfuls of lotion doesn’t even rank.
  • Monday night I got to go to my first [non-family] concert of the year with my friend, Sarah. Ingrid Michaelson was phenomenal (and hilarious – she performed a spoof of Lady Gaga’s bad romance with lyrics about a goat, trust me, too funny)! I love the Calvin FAC and I love live music and I really love a night spent with a wonderful friend!
  • Ingrid (I can call her that because we’re totally friends now – yup) had an opening act that I also loved: Sugar and the Hi Lows. Check them out if you want some mellow, catchy music… rest assured I’ll be featuring them soon on Music Monday.
  • Remember when I said that the school year wouldn’t be so different from our normal summer routine because I still work and the kids were used to daycare? Or maybe I just thought it. Either way, I was wrong, wrong, wrong. School, even with one kid, is very different and very time-consuming and very much screwing up my schedule and making me feel overwhelmed with busy-ness. That is all. And also, I should never have thought that.
  • I cannot say enough how much I enjoy our small group at church. Get theeself a small group – it might end up being one of the best things you’ve ever done.
  • We had curriculum night at school last week and Liam’s teacher amazes me with her positive, energetic attitude – if I were a first grader I would adore her (as an adult, I like her just fine). She and her hubby were high school sweethearts which is the cutest – I believe that awesome people marry (and stay with) their high school sweethearts, it’s not for everyone. I myself had a series of high school obsessions crushes, I am not that kind of awesome.
  • Liam (and by extension, Jack, see above lotion incident) is OB-sessed with ninjas. He had to depict a story problem for homework, he drew ninjas; at PT on Monday morning he was telling the therapist about his favorite Lego Ninjagos; he drew a picture for his cousin Mitch, it was of a ninja and when he made a coaster/tile for me at daycare, he painted a ninja on it.
  • Jack seems to know when I am just full of it or not taking him seriously. Sunday morning I was trying to get him to leave the nursery and he was insistent that he had more pictures to collect that he had colored, although there was only one on the counter with his name on it. When we finally discovered a stack of about ten more on a shelf, he looked at me crossly and huffed, “You say me there was no more… but there were!” Like, I have got your number, woman and I will have none of it. Trouble.

Monday Randoms

Don’t think we’ve done a random list on a Monday before and also not going to do a search to find out if we have… sorry, that’s the effort I’m willing to put in today.

To kick us off, here’s a random photo from my computer:

That’s me on Christmas morning with some incredible crazy hair. I think I was pretty cute back then.

  • My kids are missing being able to run around on playgrounds for hours at a time – this is what I’m blaming their nutso behavior on from when we were at my parent’s house this weekend. My dad suggested that our next house be big enough to have a jungle gym inside. I’m thinking a padded room (not sure if it will be for me or for them).
  • Liam finally saved enough money to buy his green ninja – he was beyond thrilled and even slept with it last night (to ward off nightmares).
  • Jack slept in his sweater with a skull and crossbones on it, also to ward off nightmares – to each their own.
  • I exasperatedly told Jack he wasn’t cute this weekend (because he was being a pill) and he smiled, with a twinkle in his eye and replied, “I am cute!” To my credit, my dad laughed out loud before I did.
  • My dad’s knee is looking like a science project (he had his second knee replaced on Monday) but he is getting around pretty well. The boys were fascinated with looking at the stitches (of which there were many).
  • Making baked goods is my love language – I made two batches of Triple Chip Blondies and a double batch of Carmelitas last week – my friends gobbled them up but my hubby has been “too full” to eat any… pretty sure that’s against his husbandly duties. My children also refuse to eat them, though they happily lick the beaters while I’m making them… this kind of self control is not something I’m familiar with.
  • I’ve been thinking about what’s next for me in life… what’s my next challenge, big thing, what have you… and I’ve been drawn to the discipline of working on my writing. I signed up for “The Practice of Writing” by Alice at Finslippy and have started reading a free ebook I got last week You Are a Writer (So Start Acting Like One). We shall see where it takes me.
  • I’ve also been thinking a ton about things I gleaned from our speaker at the women’s retreat a week ago. Sharon Brown spoke of spiritual discipline and being open to what God has to tell us, saying, like Mary, “Here I am.” I’ve been praying about the Hebrew words for that “hineni” and wondering how I can live that and being totally open to what God has in store for me. I’m certainly not done with raising my boys (is a parent ever fully done?) but I feel like I have the capacity to take on something else, to be open to what God needs me to do, whatever that is.
  • We had a fun double date night last night and checked out a new restaurant/brewery in town – Perrin Brewing Company. Great place if you are local and like beer (and chili cheese fries). We’d love to meet you there!
  • I missed most of the Emmy Awards last night… completely forgot that were on but I’m happy Homeland and Modern Family won the big awards. Those are both shows I very much enjoy (though Homeland and enjoy are not really words that should go together when talking about a show focused on very flawed main characters but it is just so good).
  • Thanks to my lovely husband, I have two concerts to look forward to for the fall after not going to any this year (other than The Verve Pipe family concert). Ingrid Michaelson and fun. will both be at Calvin, I’m excited to check them out.
  • We checked out ArtPrize a little bit yesterday and I can’t wait to get down there and see more – I just love this time of year in GR!
  • We started off our day of good company and good food yesterday by meeting my niece and her husband for brunch at our favorite breakfast spot: Wolfgang’s. Everyone was happy – Liam almost polished off an entire plate of pancakes and Jack made good work off his grilled cinnamon roll… it’s always a good meal out with kids when they happily eat the food in front of them. I felt a little bad that Quinn and Chris had to spend part of their child-free weekend with our kids, but someone else’s kids are always easier to handle than your own so we’ll call it good!
  • Fall in Michigan is just magical. I dare you to disagree with me.
  • And I have to admit… I miss [some of] my smoothies from the juice detox…
  • I stopped at a local cafe one morning last week for a coffee and I have to say I will not be back because a) the coffee was way overpriced for the quantity I received (though it was tasty) and b) it took 15 minutes for me to get my coffee and there was only one person ahead of me in line when I got there. Sheer incompetence does not get repeat business.
  • I love my friends. And I very much love my family.
  • I do not love people who drive like they are the only people on the road.
  • Simon and I saw a large fish in the middle of the road on our way to our date. We were out in the country and not anywhere near water and while I’m sure there was a reasonable explanation for the fish being there, I think we can agree that seeing a fish as “roadkill” is a bit odd.

Thursday Randoms

  • For lunch today I had a grape and fig protein smoothie that I believe has some cinnamon or nutmeg in it. It was very unusual and quite tasty (like for real).
  • My five-day juice/raw food detox is actually going quite well. I would not use the word “enjoy” but it really isn’t bad. I was realizing last night that I while I really wanted to eat something, it wasn’t because I was actually hungry, just that I wanted to eat – which is the wrong reason to eat.
  • I cannot imagine not enjoying food – but I know there are people who aren’t all about new flavors or delicious bites, very strange people who food does nothing for.
  • The evening meals might be my most favorite of the whole thing – we get raw soups each day: Thai Curry, Tomato Basil, Cream of Celery and tonight is Beet. They have been delicious and served with sesame seed crackers that at first weren’t that tasty to me but by last night were delicious (funny how your perspective shifts)
  • I have “cheated” with a couple tablespoons of soybeans and a hard-boiled egg (the first day I really needed a little extra protein), but otherwise I’ve been diligent – even drinking “fake” coffee (a blend of roasted barley, rye, chicory root, dandelion root and beetroot. I really don’t even know myself after reading that last sentence.
  • MOPS starts up next week – I am super excited about that!
  • This weekend is the women’s retreat for church… happy day! So looking forward to 2 days of fellowship and rest (plus a whole bunch of laughter).
  • Thank goodness for my mom who is coming to watch the boys while Simon is at work tomorrow afternoon/evening.
  • I’m possibly addicted to a natural shellac manicure… it makes my nails strong and unbreakable (aside from one I totally snapped off driving yesterday) and it stays on for nearly three weeks.
  • Liam has made a new good friend at school and I am so thankful and think it is super sweet that they have found each other. Liam is invited to his birthday party on Sunday and he is over the moon.
  • Liam said yesterday, “It’s no fair, Jack gets to do all sorts of fun things [i.e., walking with mommy, mall with daddy] and I just have to work, work, work all day!” Because first grade is so hard.
  • Whereas Jack strongly believes that it is no fair that Liam gets to go to school every day and he just has to hang out with daddy. Poor kids. Life is so hard.
  • In other news, I’m not my most sympathetic self this week.
  • I read a book I’d highly recommend to those in search of a good, funny, poignant read. The author is one of my favorite reviewers from the early days of Television Without Pity who now has her own blog and (apparently) career as a novelist. The book is called “You Take It From Here” Here’s the recap from Amazon:
On the heels of a divorce, all Danielle Meyers wants is her annual vacation with sassy, life-long best friend, Smidge—complete with umbrella cocktails by an infinity pool—but instead she’s hit with the curveball of a lifetime. Smidge takes Danielle to the middle of nowhere to reveal a diagnosis of terminal cancer, followed by an unusual request: “After I’m gone, I want you to finish the job. Marry my husband. Raise my daughter. I’m gonna teach you to how to be Smidge 2.0.”As Danielle wrestles with this major life decision, she finds herself torn between being true to her best friend’s wishes and being honest with herself. Parenting issues aside, Smidge’s small-town Louisiana world is exactly the one Danielle made sure to escape. Danielle isn’t one for playing the social butterfly, or being the center of attention. And when your best friend tries to set you up on a date night with her husband, it might be time to become the bossy one for a change.
In the spirit of Beaches and Steel Magnolias, You Take It from Here is an honest, hilarious, and heartbreaking novel that ultimately asks: How much should we sacrifice for the ones we love the most?
  • Simon and I got sucked into listening to a financial advisor for 2.5 hours yesterday. Apparently this person has been a sociologist, a business owner, a musician, an arts major, a world traveler and now a financial planner. Ugh. He was long-winded and told all the same stories he told when we met originally to talk about business stuff (albeit much more briefly, otherwise I would not have met with him again). Dislike. Plus when he found out I went to Calvin, he really turned up the Christian-isms, though he hadn’t at all indicated he was a person of faith before that. Double dislike.
  • I scared a little boy the other day when I saw that he was noticing Jack’s little hand – as in staring at it and holding onto it (the boy was probably 9 or 10) – so I said, “Jack, do you want to tell him about your hand?” And the boy then knew I noticed he was noticing it and instead of sticking around and listening to him, he ran away. Sorry about that.
  • A new brewery is opening north of town – cannot wait to check it out with Simon… Perrin Brewing Co. here we come!
