Jack loved the tire swing.

image
Liam is a little excited about his Halloween costume and wore it all day the day I brought it home.

image
I was trying to catch him rolling his eyes but this was close enough.

image
Sunrise over Reed’s Lake. And I got to share it with Liam who told me to stop and take a picture. Love him.

image
Pics from Monday’s concert… Ingrid Michaelson is so wee and so mighty.

image
The face of trouble… he was on my lap (in the driveway) pretending to drive the van. Um, no.

image
Jack loves picking his brother up from school which once again gives me hope they will be best buddies. Love his expectant face.

image
I got two hours to myself Saturday morning… granita from Kava, tunes from Pandora (Enya channel, best for studying) and diving into Philippians.

image
Fall is the perfect time for pumpkin chocolate chip muffins. Simon said they were better than my mom’s… he could have been lying but he is a good man.

Instagram | Week 24

Hello again! Happy day before Friday!

image
Remember Mr. Cool from this post? Well, he pulled up behind me at the same stoplight last week so I had to take his picture again. The funny thing is, after the last post, two friends of mine told me that they went to church with the guy and he is actually very nice and normal but he has this convertible he pulls out when the weather gets nice. More power to him… he just amuses me and I like when I see the same people twice in the same spot – serendipity.

image
I see personalized license plates EVERYWHERE lately and so I’ve started taking pictures when I can. (though the bottom left one isn’t personalized so much as unfortunate with the fives looking like S’s from a distance). What I don’t understand is personalized license plates that are not obvious… what is the point if it is just your own little inside joke? Maybe that is the point but it’s a point I do not support. If I were to ever get one, it would be obvious, like AWESOM or I ROCK or SMILE – if you’re going to go to the trouble, have the confidence to make it count.

image
My husband has official coach-wear, I think this is adorable (and also manly). The back of his jersey says “Boss” which is amusing when he wears it at home.

image
While Simon was coaching rugby, we spent the day in Lansing visiting my parents. The boys had lots of fun pretending to be “minjas” (as Jack says) wearing exercise bands around their heads.

image
We had a bit of a wait at Wolfgang’s for breakfast (well worth it) but the boys were a little stir crazy so we told them to go hang out by the wall (a better option than staring inside at the people eating). They looked like little street urchins (you know, in Columbia fleeces), especially when Jack starting sprawling out on the ground.

image
We toured ArtPrize with my comrades from grkids.com and at the end of our trip we tried to get a picture of some of the kids at the Calder with the grkids’ stickers on their backs… it was moderately successful. In other news, I love the Calder.

image
These were Liam’s favorite pieces – all featuring animals (surprise). I do love the horses in the river.

image
Sunset in Michigan, though the horizon almost looks like mountains. I love that Liam was the one who told me to take this picture – he has an eye for beauty.

image
From just this morning – the sun was streaming through the clouds our entire way to school and Liam said, “It looks like Jesus is talking to us.” Love that.

A good lot of photos this week… it was a good week (even with a juice/raw food detox – which reminds me, I so should have taken a picture of my first meal post-detox. It was Mexican with green salsa and pretty tasty.)
image
My first raw smoothie – this one featured cilantro and pineapple. It was not my most favorite but I could have stirred it up more so I wasn’t left with a lot of cilantro and green stuff at the end.

image
I drank this “fake coffee” as I called it last week. As I wrote on Instagram, it wasn’t awful.

image
We still remember. Flags at half-mast outside of a client’s building. Driving by more flags at half-mast prompted Liam to ask me why they were that way and I started to explain to him the significance in general and then talked about why Sept. 11 was an important date in our history as a nation. Trying to explain pure evil to your 6-year-old is not easy.

image
The sunsets lately have been glorious and now the kids request that I take a photo of the sky on our way home.

image
Day four of the juice detox and I had to make treats for the weekend retreat I was going to… these Brookies… I was so diligent, I didn’t even lick batter off my fingers. But the one I ate on Friday night sure did taste good!

image
Jack has started wanting to “read” and look at books on his own. I love this.

image
Warm water + cold air + sunrise = beauty. God’s a bit of a showoff.

image
Portage Lake was bursting with photo opportunities.

image
Love how overpowering the sun is.

image
My dear Sarah DB… suited up to take on the Flying Squirrel (Fact: she and I both HATE squirrels).

image
Another shot of the sun with a lens flare – way to go little camera on my phone.

image
Am suspicious about the dairy in my diet, opted for a vanilla soy latte on my impromptu date with Simon yesterday morning. Again, it wasn’t awful.

Happy Monday to you – though I might hold out until later today to let you know how it actually goes. I started a 3- (possibly 5-) day raw food/juice detox this morning. At the moment I’m feeling rather virtuous and a might bit hungry, but not angry and mad at the world, so things are going all right. I’ll keep you posted! For now, let’s focus on my past week according to Instagram:
image
Pile-on daddy time – always a favorite past time.

image
Liam painted a tile/trivet as his last art project for the summer. I originally was looking at it upside down and Liam had to twist it around for me and tell me it was a painting of a ninja with purple swords. Of course.

image
We watched a different kid’s channel last weekend – this cartoon was strange, even by kid’s cartoon standards.

image
For the last day of summer vacation the boys asked to go to the new mall (Rivertown, which was built over a decade ago, but we still call it the new mall) and wanted to play at the treehouse and ride the carousel – of all the options, this made them happiest.

image
My first grader. 100% not into getting his photo taken and suddenly all grown up – I love his recent habit of walking around with his hands in his pockets.

image
I was able to get a few smiles out of him.

image
And for comparison – first days of school from kindergarten and first grade. What a difference a year makes.

image
Jack got to hang out with me at work for about an hour before picking Liam up from school… he was pretty good, though I made the mistake of having him watch a new-to-him movie which got him all anxious and had him yelling at the bad guy on the screen. Next time we’ll stick to Backyardigans, where he only sings along with the intro song.

image
Yet another beautiful sunset.

image
And a much less beautiful mantis. This one was in the backyard where I slept outside in a tent. Ewww.

image
My lazy boy, hanging out with mommy with his goldfish crackers.

image
Little 16-day-old Emerson – such a sweet baby! We got to cuddle him up on Saturday! And the big boys indulged in a little FIFA 12 soccer on the Wii while the little boys played with even littler kid toys – everyone was happy (except their dog, Vince, who Liam hit in the eye with a tennis ball – sorry, Vince, those Bennett boys cannot be trusted).

Happy Saturday – I visited the Farmer’s Market this morning – happy, indeed! Lots of goodies to be found… tomatillos, peppers, sweet corn, heirloom tomatoes, basil, fresh mozzarella, kohlrabi, radishes and breakfast at What the Truck (chorizo breakfast burrito with a side of seasoned potatoes). Yum.

Here’s what we’ve been up to the rest of the week:

image
Jack got “stuck” in our bathroom door – I love that his head is bigger than this stomach, cannot say the same for myself 🙂 And of course, Liam would not be outdone by his little brother…

image

image
I happened upon someone’s handiwork on a walk with Jack… ah, Nirvana, one of the first bands I ever saw in concert. Also the first time I learned about a contact buzz, surprisingly, Nirvana concert-goers smoke medicinal marijuana.

image
Anyone else remember when gas was less than a dollar a gallon? Does asking that question make me old?

image
This posture is very unusual for Jack… maybe this is a turning point in his development, no longer needing to be in constant motion! Fingers crossed.

image
While Liam was at my parents house for a couple days we got to have fun with just Jack… such a treat having one child for a couple days! Jack very much enjoyed himself at our favorite fall destination… Schwalliers Country Basket. And we got to see two very new baby goats, born that morning. If only human babies came out with the ability to run and jump, it amazes me when you see that with other animals.

image

image
Then it was Liam’s turn for a little one-on-one time… a date for fro-yo at Spoonlickers… coco puffs are his favorite topping choice. I love cappuccino yogurt with butterscotch chips.
