Music Monday: Well Done

image

No a perfect picture but just what I needed to see this morning on the way to early-morning PT. Liam joined me for this session so I could just drop him off at school afterwards and it was just a nice morning, complete with a gorgeous sunrise over Reed’s Lake. Makes me want to get up early tomorrow and see it again (and that’s saying a lot).

And like the sunrise, this song makes me want to do better things for myself. Give it a listen if you are looking for a little (Christian) inspiration. It’s a new favorite of mine.

Hello again! Happy day before Friday!

Remember Mr. Cool from this post? Well, he pulled up behind me at the same stoplight last week so I had to take his picture again. The funny thing is, after the last post, two friends of mine told me that they went to church with the guy and he is actually very nice and normal but he has this convertible he pulls out when the weather gets nice. More power to him… he just amuses me and I like when I see the same people twice in the same spot – serendipity.

I see personalized license plates EVERYWHERE lately and so I’ve started taking pictures when I can. (though the bottom left one isn’t personalized so much as unfortunate with the fives looking like S’s from a distance). What I don’t understand is personalized license plates that are not obvious… what is the point if it is just your own little inside joke? Maybe that is the point but it’s a point I do not support. If I were to ever get one, it would be obvious, like AWESOM or I ROCK or SMILE – if you’re going to go to the trouble, have the confidence to make it count.

My husband has official coach-wear, I think this is adorable (and also manly). The back of his jersey says “Boss” which is amusing when he wears it at home.

image
While Simon was coaching rugby, we spent the day in Lansing visiting my parents. The boys had lots of fun pretending to be “minjas” (as Jack says) wearing exercise bands around their heads.

image
We had a bit of a wait at Wolfgang’s for breakfast (well worth it) but the boys were a little stir crazy so we told them to go hang out by the wall (a better option than staring inside at the people eating). They looked like little street urchins (you know, in Columbia fleeces), especially when Jack starting sprawling out on the ground.

We toured ArtPrize with my comrades from grkids.com and at the end of our trip we tried to get a picture of some of the kids at the Calder with the grkids’ stickers on their backs… it was moderately successful. In other news, I love the Calder.

These were Liam’s favorite pieces – all featuring animals (surprise). I do love the horses in the river.

Sunset in Michigan, though the horizon almost looks like mountains. I love that Liam was the one who told me to take this picture – he has an eye for beauty.

From just this morning – the sun was streaming through the clouds our entire way to school and Liam said, “It looks like Jesus is talking to us.” Love that.

Television Characters My Younger Self Would Have Married

While talking with someone last week about Claire Danes and her impressive performance in Homeland, I mentioned that I still see her as Angela from My So Called Life – the first thing I think I ever saw her in – which made me think of of Jordan Catalano (her character’s love interest in the show) and how much I wanted to date him when I was that age. Which led me to think of other TV characters I was in love with in my youth… ahh, the good old days.

Ricky Stratton (Silver Spoons) | Mostly because I wanted to live in that mansion and have someone cater to my every need – apparently I was dreaming of a life of leisure as a child.

Mike Seaver (Growing Pains) | This is kind of a given for any child of the 80s… that smile was just irresistable.

Charles (Charles in Charge) | I was always a sucker for an authoritative man, and his appeal was further highlighted by his playing opposite of his complete doofus of a best friend.

Zack Morris (Saved by the Bell) | That impish smile and effervescent charm… who wasn’t cheering for Zack and Kelly to end up together forever (when they weren’t hoping Zack would materialize in front of them and propose)?

Will Smith (Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) | Though I didn’t realize until I Googled his character name, that it is/was the same as his actual name – does this mean I actually wanted to marry the real Will Smith? I probably wouldn’t have turned him down but considering I’m no Jada Pinkett, I don’t think it would have worked out. But he was so cute and he was sent away from home, which made me just want to give him a big hug.

Jordan Catalano (My So Called Life) | Oh yes, my bad boy phase, perfectly epitomized by the brooding and dark Jordan Catalano with the killer eyes. I believe I watched, rewound and rewatched Jordan and Angela’s first kiss more times that I should ever admit (which was quite a commitment back in the days of VHS). The nerdy girl got the bad boy, strange that I would relate to that.

Noel or Ben (Felicity) | As different as they were, either of the leading men on that show would have worked for me… solid, sweet Noel or exasperatingly unreliable but totally forgiveable Ben (simply for the way he whisper-said “Hi”) – I think Felicity picked the right one for her but until the end, I loved them both (though if forced, I’d totally pick Scott Speedman – which is okay since he was in Underworld with Simon’s celebrity crush, Kate Beckinsale and in some convoluted way, I’m going to say that absolves me of any guilt).

Dawson and then Pacey (Dawson’s Creek) | Unlike my shared attraction for both Noel and Ben from Felicity, my likes when it came to Dawson’s Creek inititally were 100% with Dawson and then switched completely over to Pacey (perhaps my affections can be easily manipulated with good writing but once Dawson did the ugly cry on the docks while Joey ran away from him for Pacey that was it for me, no looking back – my apologies James Vander Beek, but that was not your finest acting moment).

And last, but not least:

Vaughn (Alias) |  Oh Michael Vartan… that show… the perfect mix of volnerability, intrigue, adventure and intensity and Vaughn. Sigh. [And then I remember that Alias also brought Bradley Cooper onto my radar. Thank you very much for that one J. J. Abrams and Bad Robot.]

And again, it should be noted, I love my husband who embodies all the best things about the characters listed above, plus he’s Australian (and I love accents, right, Jonna?).

Monday Randoms

Don’t think we’ve done a random list on a Monday before and also not going to do a search to find out if we have… sorry, that’s the effort I’m willing to put in today.

To kick us off, here’s a random photo from my computer:

That’s me on Christmas morning with some incredible crazy hair. I think I was pretty cute back then.

  • My kids are missing being able to run around on playgrounds for hours at a time – this is what I’m blaming their nutso behavior on from when we were at my parent’s house this weekend. My dad suggested that our next house be big enough to have a jungle gym inside. I’m thinking a padded room (not sure if it will be for me or for them).
  • Liam finally saved enough money to buy his green ninja – he was beyond thrilled and even slept with it last night (to ward off nightmares).
  • Jack slept in his sweater with a skull and crossbones on it, also to ward off nightmares – to each their own.
  • I exasperatedly told Jack he wasn’t cute this weekend (because he was being a pill) and he smiled, with a twinkle in his eye and replied, “I am cute!” To my credit, my dad laughed out loud before I did.
  • My dad’s knee is looking like a science project (he had his second knee replaced on Monday) but he is getting around pretty well. The boys were fascinated with looking at the stitches (of which there were many).
  • Making baked goods is my love language – I made two batches of Triple Chip Blondies and a double batch of Carmelitas last week – my friends gobbled them up but my hubby has been “too full” to eat any… pretty sure that’s against his husbandly duties. My children also refuse to eat them, though they happily lick the beaters while I’m making them… this kind of self control is not something I’m familiar with.
  • I’ve been thinking about what’s next for me in life… what’s my next challenge, big thing, what have you… and I’ve been drawn to the discipline of working on my writing. I signed up for “The Practice of Writing” by Alice at Finslippy and have started reading a free ebook I got last week You Are a Writer (So Start Acting Like One). We shall see where it takes me.
  • I’ve also been thinking a ton about things I gleaned from our speaker at the women’s retreat a week ago. Sharon Brown spoke of spiritual discipline and being open to what God has to tell us, saying, like Mary, “Here I am.” I’ve been praying about the Hebrew words for that “hineni” and wondering how I can live that and being totally open to what God has in store for me. I’m certainly not done with raising my boys (is a parent ever fully done?) but I feel like I have the capacity to take on something else, to be open to what God needs me to do, whatever that is.
  • We had a fun double date night last night and checked out a new restaurant/brewery in town – Perrin Brewing Company. Great place if you are local and like beer (and chili cheese fries). We’d love to meet you there!
  • I missed most of the Emmy Awards last night… completely forgot that were on but I’m happy Homeland and Modern Family won the big awards. Those are both shows I very much enjoy (though Homeland and enjoy are not really words that should go together when talking about a show focused on very flawed main characters but it is just so good).
  • Thanks to my lovely husband, I have two concerts to look forward to for the fall after not going to any this year (other than The Verve Pipe family concert). Ingrid Michaelson and fun. will both be at Calvin, I’m excited to check them out.
  • We checked out ArtPrize a little bit yesterday and I can’t wait to get down there and see more – I just love this time of year in GR!
  • We started off our day of good company and good food yesterday by meeting my niece and her husband for brunch at our favorite breakfast spot: Wolfgang’s. Everyone was happy – Liam almost polished off an entire plate of pancakes and Jack made good work off his grilled cinnamon roll… it’s always a good meal out with kids when they happily eat the food in front of them. I felt a little bad that Quinn and Chris had to spend part of their child-free weekend with our kids, but someone else’s kids are always easier to handle than your own so we’ll call it good!
  • Fall in Michigan is just magical. I dare you to disagree with me.
  • And I have to admit… I miss [some of] my smoothies from the juice detox…
  • I stopped at a local cafe one morning last week for a coffee and I have to say I will not be back because a) the coffee was way overpriced for the quantity I received (though it was tasty) and b) it took 15 minutes for me to get my coffee and there was only one person ahead of me in line when I got there. Sheer incompetence does not get repeat business.
  • I love my friends. And I very much love my family.
  • I do not love people who drive like they are the only people on the road.
  • Simon and I saw a large fish in the middle of the road on our way to our date. We were out in the country and not anywhere near water and while I’m sure there was a reasonable explanation for the fish being there, I think we can agree that seeing a fish as “roadkill” is a bit odd.

Recommended Reading

Not sure if I’ll get around to Five Question Friday – but I have a handful of posts by other people that I think you should read or check out… and in the meantime, I’ll try to pull my thoughts together for a coherent post about life, what I’m learning and what I’ve been thinking about (perhaps multiple posts).

  • It All Vanishes by one of my most favorite bloggers (Linda from All & Sundry) who also happens to have two boys. It perfectly captures of the heartache of watching your kids grow up.
She also linked to this fabulous video:
  • Listen With Your Heart by another favorite, Tricia Lott Williford, whose book I cannot wait to read. Also, her best man’s toast from her brother’s wedding was pretty awesome.
  • Portrait of a Man Child by Angella – makes me wonder how I can best parent each of my boys.
  • If you are inclined to pray or lend financial support to worthy causes, please check out my friend Jonna’s blog and support letter.
  • Love this Baby’s Out, Now What post from L & D nurse, Mama M.
  • We Think We Move Through the World Unseen by the lovely Andrea Scher
  • Parenting Olympics by Laura Case (only slightly tardy since the Olympics were eons ago).
  • Ten Years Later by Lisa Leonard, on what she would tell her younger self when her son with special needs was born – we all learn in our own time that the perfection the world tells us a child ought to have is completely relative. Each child is perfect just as it is.
  • Gamechanger by Leah when thinking about whether or not having a child changes you.

Happy reading (and watching that video).
