Favorite Finds – 2/4/2011

Here are MY favorite finds from around the web:

Crafts I’d like to try:

  • This pillow is strangely appealing, though I’d like to try it with a different color scheme
  • This alphabet wall art – always looking for cute things for the kiddo’s rooms
  • While these glitter tie shirts are awesome, I think I’d love to make a “2” for Jack’s birthday [which is Sunday, as in TWO days away!]
  • This heart garland totally makes me wish I had girls or a desire to decorate the house for Valentine’s day

Posts I liked and I’ll tell you why…

  • I’d love to buy a bottle of bourbon and try out the drinks at the bottom of Leah’s Post plus, then I could send her the bottle!
  • So thankful for OMSH’s sharing her story of no fat by forty
  • This dooce post that made me laugh out loud the first (and second) time I read it
  • So glad there are people like Jenny, The Bloggess who are willing to talk about mental illness, here’s hoping that it helps others

New to me blogs:

Slump

I think I’m in a slump. Overall I am happy but in general, not content. I’m having trouble finding the motivation to get things done. Mostly at work, but at home, too. I’m hoping our vacation at the end of the month will rejuvenate me (or, perhaps send me to the crazy house – we’re roadtripping 1200 miles with our 4.5-year-old and newly 2-year-old). But if not, I need to figure out what to do to get out of this slump because dreading the coming week starting every Sunday after lunch is no way to be living the rest of my life.

Oh how I wish for independent wealth. Or a new career. I realize that neither of these are going to just fall into my lap, but that sure would be ideal.

First, I’m super excited for the big adventure my friend Jonna will be taking later on this year!

Music Monday: David Gray

Music is one of my favorite things – listening to it, not actually playing it. I had many lessons as a child, playing the violin for 4 years, piano for 2 years and the guitar for one summer (I had a small crush on the best friend of my guitar teacher; sadly, I did not put as much into learning to play the guitar as I did into pursuing the guy and I failed at both) – so I would never, ever claim to be a musician, but I love music! The perfect day would most definitely include being at a concert of some kind – live music, no matter what it is, moves me in a way nothing else does. My kids are beginning to share my love of music and aside from the Wiggles and Yo Gabba Gabba!, we don’t listen to kids music and that makes my heart happy. Liam’s favorite song is One Republic’s Apologize (or something from AC/DC – but he’s not allowed to listen to that when I’m in the car, I have my musical limits).

On Mondays (or as many of them as I can) I hope to share with you the music or musicians that I love and talk a little bit about my experience with them. Or to talk about music in general.

I’ll take this first opportunity to talk about someone I first heard on an episode of Dawson’s Creek (oh how I loved that show and Pacey, and I found many new-to-me songs and musicians though this show and Felicity, the good old WB network). It was at the end of the episode where Pacey and Joey returned from their summer at sea to face what they left behind… angry, sad-faced Dawson. After the long day, they met back up at the boat to make googly faces at each other and… read (no really). But the song playing in the background was David Gray’s This Year’s Love. The piano intro still gives me chills, no matter how many times I hear it.

I’ve seen him live three times and each of those concerts would rank in my top ten concerts list (if I had one – note to self, make this list). Minneapolis at the old theater on University of Minnesota’s campus, we were in the balcony – lucky enough to have gotten tickets to a show that sold out in less than 10 minutes – and you could feel the floor swaying back and forth to the music. Then twice in Chicago, once at The Vic and then at the Auditorium Theater. And hopefully a few more times to come in the future.

There is nothing about his music or his signature head wiggle that I don’t enjoy. And while This Year’s Love will always be my favorite, I love the new stuff, too:

I hope you enjoyed this first foray into Music Monday… who is your favorite musician or band?

Thoughts on the Golden Globes – 2011

Love awards season, but my husband isn’t a whole lot of fun to watch them with, though he is excited about this show because of Ricky Gervais. But I thought I’d share my thoughts with you…

So here we go

  • The E! coverage of the red carpet was just painful to watch but then I switched over to NBC and that was just as painful, apparently TV interviewers are not at all good at off-the-cuff interviewing.
  • Scarlett Johanssen has skipped the young, hot divorcee phase and gone right to middle-aged and washed up – perhaps her stylist is loyal to Ryan.
  • Christian Bale is rather hilarious and good (though long-winded) at given speeches. And then he ruined it by talking and talking… fail. (If you have not seen The Fighter, you better remedy that right quick – I loved it and the performances are outstanding!)
  • Katy Segal, she just gets more beautiful! Who knew Peg Bundy would grow up to be the classiest lady in the room?
  • I’d love to know what Tom Hanks was so passionately saying to Rita when The Pacific didn’t win.
  • Now Eva Longoria is looking better than ever… divorce is her friend, whether she wants it to be or not.
  • From the look of him, Steve Buscemi, were he not an actor, would be someone who would make me nervous to be alone with him, though he does seem to be a very nice guy.
  • I’m so disappointed when actors and shows win that are on HBO and Showtime because even though I’m sure they are great, I’ve never seen them and just can’t get excited about them.
  • Trent Reznor wins a Golden Globe… never would have imagined that during the Nine Inch Nail days. Maybe Marilyn Manson will someday write a score for a Pixar film.
  • Oh Justin Beiber… keep riding that wave while it lasts.
  • Helena Bonham Carter… really, can’t you put in any effort? There’s quirky and then there’s just bad.

I’d love to share more with you but at this point, the germs I got from my cutie 4-year-old reared their ugly head and I spent the next 24 hours or so playing host to the flu. Blech.
