After such a lovely weekend it’s hard to get back in the groove (though working a few hours last night really helped get me in the work frame of mind). Since the start of the year I’ve been listening to music a lot more often than normal – between wanting to drown out the workout sounds from the neighboring business, finding the joy in storing and accessing music from my Amazon Cloud Drive and having some serious insomnia issues – I find plenty of time for music. I’ve added some new favorites to the rotation. I’ve already linked to some here and here but why not include a few more? You’re bound to find something you like.
Like every girl I know, I spent hours in my teens and twenties thinking about who it was I was going to marry, wondering what he would be like and who exactly he would be. And I was in luck when I found a number of songs that were about meeting that person or directed at that unknown person.
These are dedicated to all the single girls out there, hoping and praying to find THE ONE. I can’t promise you that he’s out there but I can say either you’ll meet him or you’ll find a way to be at peace with being alone.
Part two of a series of who knows how many (part one here) looking at songs that bring me right back to college. Music is one of those things that brings me right back to a moment, drumming up all those feelings (the good and the bad).
Time of Your Life (Good Riddance) | Green Day
This song was featured in an episode of ER (a dorm favorite) where a young character had died and one of the other main characters sings it at his funeral. Needless to say, we were all sobbing while watching the episode.
If I Had Only Known | Reba McEntire
This song was in the movie “8 Seconds” with Luke Perry, the true story of a bull rider… we did not have high hopes for this movie but we all LOVED it and were all sobbing uncontrollably for quite a while after the movie ended (apparently friends who cry together over pop culture stay friends forever, love you girls).
In the Light | DC Talk
We used to listen to DC Talk while playing “evil” Uno – our version of Uno where anyone could play on the last-played card. This is the epitome of Christian Contemporary music for me, I just loved it (also loved “Jesus Freak”).
Strawberry Wine | Deana Carter
My roomies and I listened to this song fairly often the first semester of our sophomore year, way back when I was stealing Swedish Fish from Kara’s hiding spot amongst her sweaters in the closet (guess she forgave me for the stealing since we were in each others’ weddings).
This Kiss | Faith Hill
Another throwback to my brief stint as a country music lover. I ended up seeing Faith Hill and Tim McGraw in concert and we all went into the concert thinking Faith Hill was going to be awesome but it was her husband who ended up blowing us out of the water.
Crash Into Me | Dave Matthews Band
I can’t talk about college and not mention DMB, but then I’ve already gone on and on about my love of DMB and their music. But I did see Dave in concert for the first time in college (with Sparky Mark – so named because I didn’t feel that “spark” for him but still went with him to the concert – someday I should write a post about the nicknames we had for people in college, really, just the boys).
I’ve featured two other college favorites in other posts: A Long December (by Counting Crows) and Freshman (by The Verve Pipe – who I get to see performing their family album in two weeks!!)
So the Oscars were last night (well, technically tonight since I’m writing this Sunday afternoon – forgive me, I’m a plan-in-advance-when-I-can kind of girl) so to honor them, here are some of my favorite songs from movie soundtracks.
My Heart Will Go On | Celine Dion from Titanic
I once sat in a living room in Kazakhstan and performed this song with my Kazakh roommate (she played the piano) for a Russian girl’s 18th birthday. Funny on so many levels; so glad this was prior to the days of YouTube and viral videos because I’m quite certain I was overly emotive because why not? You can’t sing Celine Dion and not go all in, especially when you will NEVER see the people you are singing for again and you have dutifully drank all the vodka they have continued to pour in your glass because it is considered rude to refuse (I think it’s safe to say I didn’t want the birthday girl’s large family thinking I was rude).
Ice Cream | Sarah McLachlan from Bed of Roses
Though I’ve mentioned this one before (last week) and featured it from our wedding CD, it’s a favorite, so it must be here, too. Hello overkill, pleased to make your acquaintance.
Wayfaring Stranger | Jack White from Cold Mountain
This movie still haunts me but oh, how I loved it.
Constant Sorrow | O, Brother Where Art Thou?
Lose Yourself | Eminem from 8 Mile
Also awesome from last year’s Chrysler commercial.
You’ve Got a Friend in Me | Randy Newman from Toy Story
Really, the list could go on and on so I’ll stop there with that variety. What’s your favorite song from a movie?
This might be a 2- or 3-part series because there are just too many songs for one post, but I was thinking about college and what I should post for today and voila, I had my answer…
So many happy memories from college center around music… plus a few sad ones (Jenny, I’m looking at you and Lisa and “Unbreak My Heart”). Impromptu hymn sings with Lisa playing guitar, line dancing in the hallway, studying for tests/finals, mix tapes, road trips, Amy Grant’s Christmas CD, hanging out in dorm rooms… all fun times, all with their own soundtrack.
I already featured Sarah McLachlan’s Ice Cream, because it is my favorite of her songs, but we loved ALL her stuff from Fumbling Toward Ecstasy or Surfacing.
Good Enough | Sarah McLachlan
Angel | Sarah McLachlan (Though now this is a little overused in the animal rescue commercials)
Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under | Shania Twain
Hi, I'm Michelle, married mother of two active boys (plus one 9-pound poodle). I'm a proud Michigander, having lived here all my life (besides the 10 months I lived in Chicago during/after college). I love family, friends, God, food, enjoying life and continually striving for improvement.
