Music Monday: Favorites of 2012

These are slightly different from my listing of most played in 2012… these more take into account the ones I burned to CDs and listened to on my phone/Kindle. I’d love to hear what your favorite songs of 2012 were… please share in the comments.

January

January kicked off with us on a plane on the way to Australia where I discovered Pumped Up Kicks and added it to my flying playlist on the way to and back from Oz… plus it was on the radio and in a regularly-played TV commercial while we were there. I cannot hear this song and not think of our time in the land down under. Same goes for Light Up the Sky which I heard on the iPad we borrowed for our trip, perfect since Simon and I saw The Afters live a few years ago while we were still dating.

Pumped Up Kicks – Foster the People
Runner up: Light Up the Sky – The Afters

February

Get this album and get it now. You’re welcome.

Barton Hollow – The Civil Wars (because it was the song that introduced me to them)
Runner up: The rest of the Civil Wars album

March

M83 is on Amazon’s list for rising artists for 2013, so my liking them is ahead of the curve, I’d just like to note that. Runner up, fun., was a little sneak preview for the concert I didn’t yet know I’d be going to in November!

Midnight City – M83
Runner up: The Gambler – fun.

April

I previously admitted that I discovered this song watching the finale of One Tree Hill but don’t hold that against it, Half Moon is just really good. Side note: I would love to pick music for a TV show – that would be my dream job. And Mr. A to Z, Jason Mraz’s I Won’t Give Up is just the perfect pick-yourself-up-and-hang-in-there song.

Half Moon – Blind Pilot
Runner up: I Won’t Give Up – Jason Mraz

May

A favorite of my boys since May, Feel So Close is still requested in our swagger wagon. And I couldn’t pick just one runner up this month – the trio listed is the ideal start to a low-key, rainy day playlist.

Feel So Close – Calvin Harris
Runners up: Better Days – Amos Lee; Flowers in Your Hair – The Lumineers; Be Still – The Fray

June

My favorite praise and worship song of the year – though I will be sad to hear it in church again now that our phenomenal music person has left us for a job back in his hometown in Colorado. And on the opposite end of the spectrum – Magic – the second most-requested song in the minivan; I’m super thankful I can also enjoy the music my kids like.

10,000 Reasons – Matt Redman
Runner up: Magic – B.o.B. with Rivers Cuomo

July

Thanks to this song being featured for the women’s gymnastics promos during the Olympics, everyone in the U.S. should love this song, or at least be familiar with it (and if you’re not, you’re not patriotic, or you are my father [who is actually patriotic, for the record]). You could not get away from it this summer and for good reason – it’s a great song by the doubly named Phillip Phillips (seriously). Much less familiar, but just as catchy is my runner up – find it on YouTube, you’ll be glad you did.

Home – Phillip Phillips
Runner up: Watching You Watch Him – Eric Hutchinson

August

Oh Maroon 5. They came out with a new album (Overexposted), it’s my favorite of theirs so far and while I do always enjoy the more upbeat, poppier songs – Sad and Daylight are by far my faves.

Sad – Maroon 5 (Adam Levine’s voice and a piano, yes please)
Runner up: Daylight – Maroon 5

September

Love Little Talks (and really love the live version in the video below). September brought lots of fun, new-to-me bands/singers.

Little Talks – Of Monsters & Men
Runners up: Sooner or Later – Gavin Creel; Well Done – Moriah Peters

October

October brought even more new music and variety, plus a live concert with Sugar & The Hi-Lows and Ingrid Michaelson (marvelous). Nothing better than live music in my book (big surprise).

Odds of Being Alone – Amy Stroup & Trent Dabbs (a.k.a., Sugar & the Hi-Lows)
Runners up: Ships in the Night – Mat Kearney; Almost Lover – A Fine Frenzy; Ghost – Ingrid Michaelson

November

Kiss Me was nearly my favorite song of the year, but it made it in just for the last two months so that was the only reason it lost out. I normally don’t care much for Alicia Keys and despite it being on that Citibank commercials, I quite enjoy Girl on Fire (though my husband does not share my love of the song – I believe the words, “I hate this song” have come out of his mouth when it comes on). And My Oh My is the song that introduced me to Tristan Prettyman, whose entire album is pretty darn good.

Kiss Me – Ed Sheeran [awesome acoustic version in the video below]
Runners up: Girl on Fire – Alicia Keys; My Oh My – Tristan Prettyman

December

While I am not at all surprised that he didn’t win The Voice, Terry McDermott’s versions of I Want to Know What Love Is and Let It Be are effortlessly beautiful and awesome – so much so that I had to include both videos. And then there is Muse’s Madness… couldn’t let The Voice’s runner up push it off the list for my December runner up.

I Want to Know What Love Is – Terry McDermott (from The Voice)
Runner up: Let It Be – Terry McDermott; Madness – Muse

And because I like it nearly as much as the original by the incomparable Beatles:

Song of the Year
Home – Phillip Phillips
Runner up: Kiss Me – Ed Sheeran

Instagram 30

Merry [post] Christmas everyone! Looks like I’ve got some catching up to do… we’ll start with the last month’s worth of Instagram photos with witty explanations (which is code for Michelle rambling – I took a Muscinex DM this morning and it might be going to my head).

image
My boys love to help with baking, mostly because it means they get to lick the beaters when I’m done mixing. I’m okay with that since I have such happy memories of doing the same thing – though my mom mostly made oatmeal raisin cookies and that dough is not nearly as good as the stuff for triple chip blondies.

image
My boys are a little obsessed with “Gangnam Style” and in the photo above we were listening to it and they were running around dancing and cracking me up – especially Jack’s little strut move I sort of captured.

image
We decorated for Christmas – including our first family tree – the bejeweled bird Liam is holding is his favorite ornament. I’m hoping we can some day find an upgrade tree, one you can’t see through.

image
I just love his smile.

image
‘Tis the season for nonfat, no whip peppermint mochas.

image
Having long hair affords me the chance to play around with ideas I find on Pinterest… I am going to miss it when I cut it off for Locks of Love.

image
This kind never ceases to amaze me with the things he does.

image
All dolled up for my work Christmas dinner.

image
The “cheese” on Calvin’s campus (I believe the metal sculpture is supposed to be an abstract representation of Jonah and the whale, where you can be Jonah by sitting in the belly – sounds good to me).

image
This kid and his faces – he just has zero personality.

image
The Santa we visited at the mall was Awesome – he asked good leading questions and repeated what the boys told him so we could hear. We had to wait for a bit while they loaded paper in the printer and he chatted with Liam while Jack looked at him in awe and rubbed his hand along the fur at the edge of his coat. Unfortunately the fur was a little too inappropriately placed so when Jack hit it, it startled Santa a bit as I’m quite certain it was a little too close to a place Santa would not like to be hit. My child molested Santa – not many people can say that.

image
I made Chex mix… just a bit. The stuff in the upper right corner is special just for Simon – just the three Chex cereals and none of the other stuff (like pretzels, cheese-its and nuts). Good thing I love my husband enough to make him special Chex mix.

image
Sunrise over the power substation.

image
Making treats is my love language… this tray got delivered to Jack’s teachers at daycare.

image
Chocolate chip scones for my MOPS table… Jack loved these until they were baked and then I had to make him choke a bite down (while dry heaving) in order to earn a piece of Halloween candy. Seriously.

image
About twice a year I get crafty. Inspired by Leah, I made two trees out of the felt I had purchased to make a King Pig costume (over a year ago when I made the boys’ Angry Birds costumes). I need to make two more, in darker green and red to balance out the bright green of this one.

image
Continuing our annual tradition, we decorated Christmas cookies with friends. I did not share these with anyone else as Jack would alternate sprinkle application with licking the sprinkles off of his hand.

image
My kids declared the Saturday before we left for my parents’ house as “Cra-z Day!” They did their best to live up to the billing; hopefully now that Christmas is over, they can go back to being calm and docile. Ha.

image
Someone is growing up – I see a future teenager in this picture. Hold me.

image
Christmas Eve selfie with my big kid! Sadly the bags under my eyes only disappear when I’m frowning (how this is fair, I don’t know).

image
It finally snowed on Christmas Eve… Jack was a bit mesmerized.

image
My boys initiated their cousin, Max, into the world of wrestling and jam piles – much fun was had. It, of course, ended in tears.

image
A rare photo of me with one of my brothers… the eldest of our triple M clan (Mike, Marty and Michelle – weren’t my parents cute?).

image
Getting my baby fix with [great] nephew Ethan (who my mom semi-hilariously kept calling “Keegan” because my friend Kara [who has the same last name as my niece] has a son named Keegan; Ethan has a new nickname). Doesn’t he look like his planning a world domination?

image
Simon and I are continuing our tradition of wishing the world Merry Christmas at the end of Christmas Eve.

image
Once again looking years beyond his age, Liam spent Christmas morning reading every name aloud from his 200-page Star Wars Lego Character Encyclopedia. He dubbed this his favorite gift, until he thought more and then decided it was his new Star Wars Wii game, and then his DreamLite, or maybe the trampoline or sock monkey Santa brought. Jack just loves it all, though I believe his favorite is his “Minja” Turtle from Grandpa and Grandma.

image
Aforementioned sock monkey. Thank you, Amazon, for the quick delivery after Liam asked for this from Santa. Well, this and a real dog that would sleep on his bed… Amazon doesn’t deliver live pets, so sock monkey it was.

image
This is what happens when the adults play cards and turn on the TV to distract the children.

image
No matter how much he spins, Jack never seems to get dizzy.

Confessions of a mommy blogger

wpid-IMG_20121025_172605.jpg

It’s fairly obvious to anyone who has been reading my blog (or who has met me in person) that I’m a fairly open book. I do have a filter when I talk to you in person (and on this here bloggity blog) but I will also answer any question you pose to me and am rarely put out by an inquiry made of me by another person. I am who I am and I don’t really see the point in apologizing for it (if I think I’m doing something wrong, I try and correct the wrong – I’m not in denial, nor do I think I’m perfect). So, to that end, here are some things that I would admit to you in person but are fairly strange things to just bring up, so instead I’m listing them here for your cringe-worthy pleasure and [hopefully] amusement; maybe they can help you feel better about yourself in comparison. And hopefully it will help you see that I am a real person, regardless of how you might perceive my life, know I’m just as flawed as the next person (maybe even more so).

  • While working on a map for a client, I had to look up on my Googler [thanks, Kara, for that term – it’s my new fave] which state was Utah on the map so I would be sure and note the right one. Those central western states all blend into one in my mind.
  • I was trying to think of the last name of the lead singer of Florence and the Machine [obviously her first name is Florence] but all I could come up with was Florence Henderson or Florence Nightingale… or Florence Machine (clearly, not it). For future reference, her last name is Florence Welch.
  • I often play Words with Friends on my phone while I am indisposed in the bathroom – at home and at work. [My mom just died a little because I referred to that; also perhaps anyone I play against in WWF.] This was only embarrassing once when my phone rang while I was in the restroom at work and someone else was in the stall next to me, the loudness of the ring made it obvious that my phone was out in the open. [This is not at all as bad as the person I heard talking on her cell phone in the public restroom at Meijer – I felt bad for the person on the other end of her call when she flushed her toilet.]
  • I pretended to be asleep very early this morning when Jack came upstairs to cuddle. After a few minutes of tucking himself in beside me, he gave up with a sigh and went back downstairs. It was 5 a.m., I cannot be expected to want to cuddle at that time.
  • Despite my utter disdain for Kesha [cannot, will not put the “$” in there], I have to admit to kind of enjoying her new song (Die Young) when I heard it on the Graham Norton Show – but I draw the line at EVER downloading it. I will not do that.
  • I sometimes drink out of the milk carton (like a stereotyped teenage boy), if you come to my house and I don’t offer you milk, that is why.
  • I do not look forward to helping out with Sunday school or nursery duty; I put in my time in high school and college, I feel like now that I have kids, I should get to enjoy the church service every Sunday. I do, however, still do it with a cheerful heart (or at least attempt at having one).
  • I totally laughed this morning when Jack pranced into the kitchen, singing, “I’m shaking my penis.” Then I admonished him and told him that was inappropriate.
  • I have, on many, many occasions pulled clothes out of the laundry pile and worn them again.
  • I often forget to brush my teeth. But I am really good about chewing sugar free gum, so hopefully I do not offend anyone with my breath.
  • I still refer to non-diet soft drinks as “sugar pop” because that’s what my mom always called it.
  • I have very nasty thoughts about other drivers and very choice words for them – in my head if I have company and out loud if I do not.
  • I am a procrastinator. Why do something now when you can put it off until tomorrow?
  • I can’t tell you the last time I mopped the kitchen floor. Or dusted anything.
  • I very often say stupid things in front of Simon and almost immediately follow it up with, “Don’t you dare put that on Facebook.” One of these days he’s not going to listen to me because I have posted a number of less than flattering photos of him on FB. It’s a good thing he loves me.
  • I feel like I might have admitted this before, but on a few occasions I have used a change in plans (a canceled play date because of illness, for example) as a way to give a consequence to my kids for bad behavior. “Well, kids, since you didn’t listen to mommy, now we can’t go on that play date at our friends’ house.” Nevermind that the plans were cancelled in advance of the bad behavior; in reality, I would never cancel an actual play date due to bad behavior because I look forward to hanging out with my friends while our kids play probably more than my kids look forward to playing with those friends.
  • I dislike making small talk. I would make a horrible sales person.
  • One year after we moved into our new office I finally unpacked the last of the boxes in our storage room but there are still six boxes of files in the conference room that I have left stacked there for a year. [see: procrastinator]
  • Yesterday I had a rice krispie treat for breakfast. [The same treat that caused Jack to dry heave when I told him he had to take a bite in order to have a piece of his Halloween candy.]
  • We still have the Halloween candy in our house which we use to bribe our children into good behavior.
  • I do not get up early and publish blog posts at 5:00 in the morning, I write them the day before and schedule them to post.

Anything you’d like to confess?

Music [not] Monday: Top Plays of 2012

IMAG0734
If only for my future grown children to shake their heads at me and my music taste, here’s another year-in-review installment for Music Monday. I’m sure Liam and Jack will be so glad to know their mom downloaded One Direction and Taylor Swift at THEIR request (we’ll not talk about how I enjoy the music as well).

I have added over 600 songs in 2012 to my iTunes library. Let us pause for a moment and consider that number. That is 1.5 days worth of music – which makes it seems like not that much, until you think that is over 2000 minutes of music. I have a music problem and I’m okay with it. In my defense, because there is always a defense for “extreme” behavior, there were many, many free albums and songs in that mix – at least 150 songs were gained for free and another 200 were super cheap. Plus I finally started using my iTunes gift cards – no sense in saving them forever when there is good (good is a relative term, I realize) music to be gained. Anywho… out of that list, I was curious as to which of the songs I played the most on iTunes (which means only when I was at work and does not take into account the songs I burned to CDs and listened to in the car or on my phone via the handy Amazon Cloud). Below is a list of those that got 10+ plays (in bold are the top 5):

  1. Light Up the Sky | The Afters [This song and the one below it were on the iPad that we borrowed to take to Australia and I listened to them a ton there and clearly once I got back – just hearing them takes me right back to sitting on the couch in Simon’s mom’s house, listening to them with headphones on after everyone else had gone to bed]
  2. Jesus Saves | Tim Hughes
  3. Be Still | The Fray
  4. Don’t Gotta Work It Out | Fitz & the Tantrums
  5. Let My Love Open the Door | Pete Townshend
  6. Yesterday | Tony Lucca and Adam Levine
  7. Gonna Get Over You | Sara Bareilles
  8. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together | Taylor Swift [’tis true]
  9. Never Gonna Leave This Bed | Maroon 5
  10. A Thousand Years | Christina Perry
  11. Gaucho | Dave Matthews Band [my first glimpse at DMB’s new album]
  12. Ships in the Night | Mat Kearney [This song is a nice wake up call for anyone going through a rough spot in their marriage – pointing out how easily our lack of communication can throw things out of whack.]
  13. Not Over You | Gavin DeGraw
  14. Better Days | Amos Lee [perfect song for moping around and feeling sorry for yourself and then wanting to be uplifted]
  15. Midnight City | M83
  16. Trouble | Tony Lucca
  17. We Are Young | fun.
  18. We Found Love | Rihanna
  19. Stronger | Kelly Clarkson [I cannot hear or see her name and not think of the scene from “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”]
  20. What Makes You Beautiful | One Direction [’tis also true]
  21. Some Nights | fun.
  22. Half Moon | Blind Pilot
  23. Forever & Almost Always | Kate Voegele
  24. Tongue Tied | Grouplove
  25. Kiss Me | Ed Sheeran [The most plays of the year at 28, make that 29… and I just downloaded it two weeks ago.]

This list is a pretty perfect reflection of my music tastes… even with a couple out of the box selections, we all have our quirks.

What songs did you listen to most this year?

Senseless

ememby_john1_light

I had another post all scheduled to go today… most played songs of 2012, it’s been postponed. I’ve been thinking all weekend about what I wanted to say about what happened in Connecticut on Friday, what I could possibly have to add to all the words that are being said. I have read and heard many things that resonated with me, that have given comfort and helped frame my thinking about what happened.

Here is what I know:

  • I will not seek out information about the person who did this; there is no tidbit of information that will give me a satisfactory answer to the big question of WHY?
  • We will never understand what makes a person murder innocent people, especially when those innocent people are children. It is inexplicable and uncomprehendable. It is senseless.
  • Evil is rampant in our world, but that does not mean God is absent. He weeps for us and with us.
  • Something needs to be done to address the problems of our world, I have no idea how everything (or anything) can be fixed but I can pray, that is the very least and the most important thing I can do.
  • Countless lives were changed on Friday, directly and indirectly and once again, as has happened in the past with Columbine, 9/11, tsunamis and shuttle explosions, we will never be the same again. When things like this happen, the ripples are felt (big and small), we have to learn how to ride them out. It’s okay to be sad and mourn, we are not being self-indulgent if we do so, we are showing empathy.
  • We cannot let this tragedy be turned into soundbites and endless rounds of the blame game. We failed, all of us; none of us are perfect or without blame. But we have to try and do our best and make a difference if and when we can.
  • We cannot let fear control us. It’s never not scary to send our children out into the world. We are not promised limitless days here on earth.

What happened in Sandy Hook is senseless and desperately sad. My heart breaks for the parents. It breaks for the teachers and students who survived, who saw things no one should ever have to see. My mind rages against the unfairness of it all, rejects the muscle that evil is trying to flex. My soul longs for heaven, as much as I enjoy my life, the joy is nothing in comparison to what awaits me there.

“A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell.” C.S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain

May the glory of the Lord shine upon us and may He give us His eternal and everlasting peace.
